After collecting thousands of canned goods and nonperishables (since late September 2016), SUNY Erie Community College and its student government association joined numerous Western New York groups at the Buffalo City Mission to wrap up the year's "Mission Possible Food Drive School Challenge" with a closing awards ceremony on May 9.

Initiated to help stamp out hunger in Buffalo and its surrounding communities, the Western New York-wide drive collected more than 22,000 cans and nonperishable goods, which will lead to 6,000 meals for needy individuals and families across the region.

With collection efforts across its three campuses, ECC Kats football games and the annual "President's Holiday Gathering at North Campus," ECC and its student government association - competing under the name "Every Can Counts," or ECC - collected 4,340 canned goods.

The total was the second highest among competition participants.

Top finisher or not, ECC President Jack Quinn said the selfless effort put forth by ECC's students, faculty and staff is another example of the college community's commitment to its surrounding neighbors.

"This was an incredible feat by our Erie Community College family, and not the first time we've worked with the Buffalo City Mission with the goal of helping our city's neediest residents," Quinn said. "Working together on 'Mission Possible' has been another opportunity to aid locals around all three of ECC's campuses. We, like the City Mission, are always striving to establish a better Buffalo for all residents. That's what our student government association and ECC community have tried to do over the last year with this food drive, and we're happy to contribute thousands of goods to the tremendous efforts of our partners at the Buffalo City Mission."
