The best in contemporary craft art returns to the Kenan Center in Lockport with the 47th annual 100 American Craftsmen show, June 2-4.
One of the region's longest-running juried craft shows that remains devoted exclusively to fine, contemporary craft art, 100 American Craftsmen traditionally features a mix of veteran and new artisans in clay, metal, wood, leather, glass, paper, jewelry, wearable fiber and textiles, and mixed media.
In addition to the craft show, patrons can enjoy a variety of special amenities during the weekend, including specialty food vendors and wineries, indoor café and herbal plant sale (Saturday only, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.). There will be live music scheduled throughout the weekend, including Ralph Fava Trio from 6-9 p.m. June 2; then Mike Caputi & Co. from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Lewis & Klark from 12:30-2:30 p.m. and David Stockton & Pocket Change Trio from 3-6 p.m. June 3; and Don Metz Duo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Mark Mazur Trio from 2-5 p.m. June 4.
Returning this year will be the Annex Marketplace. The 5,800-square-foot space was added in 2015 to provide exposure for emergent and first-time artisans. In addition to exhibiting artisans, the marketplace will feature live music, a chance to watch professional craft art photographer Tim Fuss at work, and a collaborative craft-making project, which will create a permanent hanging artwork to be displayed on the Kenan Center campus. Visitors are also invited to vote for the People's Choice Award presented to an artisan in the Annex Marketplace.
100 American Craftsmen patrons always have the added opportunity to see the current exhibit in the Kenan House Gallery. This year, the gallery is hosting "Three Generations of Burchfields: Works from The Schoene Collection."
2017 not only marks the 50th anniversary of the Kenan Center in Lockport, but the 51st anniversary of a landmark in the history of the Kenan House Gallery. It was on April 30, 1966, that the fledgling gallery opened with an exhibit of works by American watercolorist Charles E. Burchfield from the collection of Charles Rand Penney. It would prove to be one of the last exhibitions Burchfield attended in person prior to his passing in January 1967.
The exhibit will bring together for the first time the works of Burchfield, both of his daughters, Catherine Burchfield Parker and Martha Burchfield Richter, and his granddaughter, Peggy Richter Haug. The exhibit is guest curated by Gerald Mead.
Exhibit hours during 100 American Craftsmen will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 3, and noon to 5 p.m. June 4.
100 American Craftsmen takes place at the Kenan Center Arena, 195 Beattie Ave., Lockport. Hours for the event are: 6-9 p.m. June 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 3 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 4. Admission is $6 for adults, with children ages 12 and under free. Active-duty military personnel and students will be admitted for half price with ID. A special tradition of 100 American Craftsmen continues with every patron receiving a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the dozens of craft objects donated by the artisans.
Co-chairs for the 2017 show are Michelle Brockman, Maggie Hagenbach, and Rosemary Stritzel. For more information, go online to www.100americancraftsmen.com or call 716-433-2617.
