CCE's new workforce development program

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County is seeking adults ages 18 or older to participate in a new workforce development program, NiagaraWorks. The program is designed to provide the skill set and knowledge needed to obtain employment in businesses, including restaurants, greenhouses, nurseries, landscaping, apartment complexes, hotels and home improvement stores.

The program is free and small stipends will be provided throughout training.

The program begins April 3 and runs for 12 weeks from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with the exception of Memorial Day (when classes will run from Tuesday to Friday). Training will take place at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County (the fairgrounds). Transportation will be available from downtown Lockport to CCE.

The NiagaraWorks workforce development program will provide support to trainees to enhance the quality of their performance and strengthen their access to employment opportunities through career counseling, supportive referral services, customer service skills and job readiness preparation.

All participants will complete introduction to horticulture training and then can choose one of the following two tracks: Greenhouse management and food preparation/processing or landscape maintenance and facilities/custodial training.

For the greenhouse management and food preparation/processing training, participants will receive hands-on training planting vegetables and herbs using hydroponics, aquaponics and raised beds; learn how to identify plants, trees, annuals and perennials; learn how to make jelly, salsa and tomato sauce for value-added production; and participate in a ServeSafe training.

For the landscape maintenance and facilities/custodial training, participants will gain technical knowledge and hands-on experience with facilities problem solving; learn the basics of equipment maintenance, drywall repair, carpentry, and flooring; learn how to plan and design outdoor spaces; and gain hands-on experience with pruning, mulching and turf care.

To obtain an application for the program, contact Kaitlin Smith at 76-433-8839, ext. 238, or [email protected] or visit www.cceniagaracounty.org. Applications are due by Friday, March 17.
