Niagara County declares April 'Donate Life Month'

The Niagara County Legislature passed a proclamation declaring April "Donate Life Month," as part of the annual nationwide campaign. Throughout the month, those who have saved lives through the gift of a donation are honored, and others are encouraged to consider registering as organ, eye and tissue donors.

Distracted driving: It's not just talking and texting on your phone

Distracted driving is deadly, claiming 3,142 lives in 2020, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In 2020, distracted driving contributed to 8.1% of the 38,824 lives lost to crashes on U.S. roadways, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In New York state alone, 110 people died in 2019 as a result of distracted driving.

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.50, up 6 cents since last Monday. One year ago, the price was $4.20. The New York state average is $3.47, up 5 cents since last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $4.30.

This year's Bruce Sutherland Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Monday, May 15, at the Niagara Frontier Golf Club at 1058 Lake Road in Youngstown. The tournament is open to the public. Funds raised will go to the Historical Association and the Lewiston Museum, in addition to the VFW Downriver Post 7487 scholarship fund - two local causes Sutherland volunteered and worked for in the past.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Saturday recognized April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in New York, issuing a proclamation. Coinciding with this proclamation, the State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence will conduct weekly "Sexual Violence 101" training, and collaborate with the state Office of General Services to host an exhibit to honor survivors' experiences and recognize International Denim Day.

That is just the small percentage of the more than 100 mas shootings that have happened so far this year. With these events happening more frequently it's hard for people to not worry and fear the worst.
