Ryan, Senate majority pass bill to improve Holocaust education in New York

New York State Sen. Sean Ryan and the Senate majority passed legislation (S.121B) designed to improve Holocaust education in New York schools. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Anna Kaplan and Assembly member Nily Rozic, has already passed the Assembly and now heads to Gov. Kathy Hochul's desk for her signature. Ryan is a co-sponsor of the legislation.

The Erie County Department of Health is announcing changes to its existing COVID-19 vaccine clinic schedule. Starting Wednesday, June 1, the COVID-19 vaccine clinic sites at SUNY Erie Community College South in Orchard Park and at the Delavan Grider Community Center in Buffalo will close permanently.

Commercial structure fire at Shawnee Golf Course

At 5:23 a.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received numerous 911 calls reporting a commercial structure fire at the Shawnee Golf Course in the Town of Wheatfield. Responding deputies found the structure to be fully involved on the north end, which was determined to be a maintenance garage for the business.

University at Buffalo biomedical informatics researchers have found that patients hospitalized with COVID-19 pneumonia had a 13.5% survival advantage when treated with a combination of leukotriene inhibitors (LTIs) and the steroid dexamethasone.

NYPA hydropower allocation to support creation of 200 jobs at General Motors Plant in Lockport

The New York Power Authority board of trustees approved a low-cost hydropower award to General Motors Components Holdings, a subsidiary of General Motors, that will support nearly 1,450 jobs - 200 newly created - at its plant in Lockport. The Niagara hydropower will support a $137 million investment by the firm that will enable the production of critical components for electric motors at its Western New York location.

DEC: 'Monster' channel catfish breaks state record

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the state record for channel catfish was broken on May 8. Using cut bait while bottom fishing, Bailey Williams of Watertown reeled in a 35-pound, 12-ounce channel catfish from the Black River in Jefferson County. Bailey's record-breaking catch surpassed the previous state record catfish, caught from Lake Ontario in 2017, by 9 ounces.
