Gerald C. "Jerry" Kutis of Grand Island passed peacefully to glory on Aug. 14, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his three children: Dan, Julie and Amy. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine (Miller) Kutis, in 2014.

DiNapoli announced the estimated value of the New York State Common Retirement Fund was $254.1 billion at the end of the first quarter of state fiscal year 2023-24. For the three-month period ending June 30, 2023, fund investments returned an estimated plus-3.08%.

Local sales tax collections in New York state grew by 3% in July compared to the same month in 2022, according to an analysis released by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Overall, local collections totaled $1.82 billion, up $53.3 million compared to the same time last year.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that vibriosis, a rare but potentially fatal bacterial infection that can cause skin breakdown and ulcers, has been identified in a recently deceased individual from Suffolk County. Fatal cases of vibriosis have also been identified in Connecticut. The governor urged New Yorkers to learn how to avoid exposure and to take appropriate precautions, as the New York State Department of Health reminded providers to consider vibriosis when diagnosing wound infections or sepsis of unknown origins.
