The Frontier House did not reopen over the summer, as ownership hoped, but it's still on track to welcome visitors back in 2024 - the building's 200th anniversary year. Lewiston's historic crown jewel has been closed since December 2004, and under construction since December 2020.

The Niagara County Industrial Development Agency on Wednesday voted in favor of granting a payment in lieu of taxes to 4600 Group LLC, the company that owns the Frontier House and adjoining property on Center Street in Lewiston.

No members of the public were in attendance Tuesday when a hearing was held regarding a request made by the Frontier House owners for a payment in lieu of taxes from the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency. Most of the repair work at the Frontier House in the past 10 years has been performed behind the scenes, revealed only through second-hand accounts. But in recent weeks, exterior work has been readily evident and on display for all to see, with massive lifts, scaffolding and tarps surrounding the 198-year-old building.

Efforts to rehabilitate and reopen the historic Frontier House began last weekend, when a team of five men from Blooms Relax Landscaping manicured the green space in front of and around the 195-year-old building, and cleaned up the children's' play area once used by McDonald's Restaurant.

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees held a reception on Monday to thank the new Frontier House owners for purchasing the vacant building and its one acre of land. Prior to the get-together, William Paladino, Jeff Williams and Bill Game were introduced to the public at a 6 p.m. work session.

The 195-year-old Frontier House was sold to a group consisting of Ellicott Development CEO William Paladino and Lewiston developers Jeff and Jerry Williams. Their newly formed LLC purchased the building and almost one acre of land - including a parking lot - from Hastings Lewiston Inc. for the price of $800,000.

Niagara Boundary and Mapping Services President Kenneth Lee Slaugenhoupt spent part of the past week laser-scanning the Frontier House. Working inside and outside the building, he used a FARO Laser Scanner, which, he said, is capable of collecting 488,000 measurements per minute with a tolerance of ±3mm (or 1/8 inch).

Town of Lewiston Justice Hon. Thomas Sheeran on Wednesday dismissed the Village of Lewiston's charges against Hastings Lewiston without prejudice. What this means is that, if the municipality moves forward with purchasing the Frontier House, the alleged building code violations become the village's responsibility. If the purchase doesn't happen, charges can be refiled against Hastings Lewiston.

Wednesday night in Town of Lewiston Justice Court, the Hon. Thomas Sheeran told principal Frontier House owners Richard and Judy Hastings he wants to see "something that we can point to that gets us closer to the goal line" of exterior renovations and/or a sale. The judge gave the Hastings family 30 days in which to act.
