Village of Lewiston agrees to buy Frontier House; trustees have 3 key opt-outs

Lewiston residents on Monday spoke passionately for and against the village's potential purchase of the historic Frontier House. In the end, trustees unanimously agreed to enter into a contract to buy the building from Hastings Lewiston.

Domestic violence is a crime that "is all about power and control," said Mary Travers Murphy, executive director of the Family Justice Center, speaking at the FJC's annual fundraising breakfast on June 8. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, "domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion or nationality." One of those communities is Grand Island.

The man for whom Lewiston was named received his own monument on Thursday, as the Village of Lewiston officially unwrapped the Morgan Lewis bust inside the International Peace Garden. Acclaimed sculptor Susan Geissler created the artwork - her third monument in Lewiston, joining the Tuscarora Heroes (Center Street) and Freedom Crossing (Water Street).

On Monday, architect James Fittante presented the Village of Lewiston Planning Commission with a proposal to expand the Tops Xpress mini-market on Cayuga and South Eighth streets. The five-member panel unanimously supported the idea, which now goes to the Village Board for approval.

Revitalized Niagara Power get first home win

After a two-year hiatus, the Niagara Power pulled off an 8-3 win against the Genesee Rapids at their home opener on Saturday, June 2. Starting pitcher Conrad Voss had seven strikeouts during the game, which remained tied 1-1 from the top of the third inning until the bottom of the sixth. That's when the Power scored five runs and finished off the victory.

As reported in last week's Sentinel, delays in construction of a new plaza on Center Street in Lewiston led the Zoning Board of Appeals to rule previously granted variances had expired. The ZBA's unanimous opinion is that construction should've begun on the project within one year of the granting of eight village code modifications - by late July 2017.
