Get to know 2018-19 Niagara County Peach Queen Santana Sawma

At this year's Peach Festival, Santana Sawma was crowned the new Peach Queen. She steps in place of 2017-18 Niagara County Peach Queen Jamie Hagerty, who raised $4,000 for Hillside Family of Agencies through multiple fundraisers, as well as volunteering for numerous causes in Niagara County.

The 61st annual Niagara County Peach Festival kicked off in fine fashion on Thursday, with family and friends flocking to Academy Park in the Village of Lewiston. They wanted to get their first taste of peach shortcake and Johnnie Ryan peach pop, play games for prizes, eat at the dozen-plus food stands and, of course, ride the rides.

Rows of extra chairs were wheeled into the Morgan Lewis Village Boardroom on Monday night to accommodate the large number of residents who filed into the Red Brick to learn more about an "Oxford House" on Creek Road Extension. After about a half-hour of civil discourse at the monthly board meeting, residents were told the group home is legal. Furthermore, the occupants can function as they have since the local program was established last September.

Grand Island Town Board: Baseline sidewalk project discussed

The Grand Island Town Board approved, by a 5-0 vote, an application for funding from the New York State Department of Transportation's Transportation Alternative Program for ADA-compliant sidewalks in the center of town on Baseline Road. If the $375,000 grant is approved, the state would provide $300,000, and the town would provide 20 percent of the funding, or $75,000.
