Rotary Club of Grand Island's high school Interact Club to be heavily involved in Supervisor Candidates' Night

The Rotary Club of Grand Island's first Town Supervisor Candidates' Night, with assistance from the Grand Island High School Interact Club and supported by the Island Dispatch, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Viking Theater inside the high school at 1100 Ransom Road.

Out of Darkness works to end stigma, encourage communication

The Out of Darkness Walk in Lockport will start with registration at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Walkers start at 1:30 p.m. and will journey one of two paths: one path on the south side following the Erie Canal for one mile and back, and the other on the north side following the canal for two miles and back. Participants will meet at the Lockport Locks Pavilion.

The New York State Thruway Authority announced this week that cashless tolling customer assistance sessions will continue at the Western New York Welcome Center on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The extension is the result of what the Thruway Authority called "the success and resident feedback of the previous sessions that have been held twice a week since June."

The Aquarium of Niagara has been ramping up its own piece of property to properly serve both locals and visitors alike. For the past few years, the aquarium has made big changes such as "Penguin Coast" in 2018 and "Aliens of the Sea" in 2019. On Sept. 27, it announced even more construction to create a new - interactive - habitat for some of nature's misunderstood children in the sea. It's called the "M&T Bank Shark & Ray Bay"

Since that time, the farm has outperformed expectations, receiving over 1,000 visitors during the summer who picked the freshly blooming lavender plants, take classes and experience country life.

WGRZ-TV purchased two full pages in the Buffalo Broadcasters Association program book to congratulate Jim Toellner, its president and general manager for the past 16 years, on his recent Hall of Fame induction. Grand Island resident Jim Toellner, the president and general manager of WGRZ-TV Channel 2 since 2003, was among six inductees into the 2019 Buffalo Broadcasting Hall of Fame on Thursday, Sept. 19, in the studios of WNED-TV. He began at WGRZ-TV as its general sales manager in 2001.
