DEC cites Cascades facility for noxious odors; company working to find long-term solution

Recently, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation served Cascades Containerboard Packaging Inc. a notice of violation after receiving numerous complaints from residents in the Town of Niagara, City of Niagara Falls and even as far away as Sanborn throughout the month of May. The agency said the company was in violation of Air Pollution Control Law, Article 19 of the Environmental Conservation Law (ECL).

On Tuesday, June 1, the LGBTQ+ flag was raised in a number of notable locations throughout Niagara County in honor of Pride Month. Flag-raising ceremonies were held at Niagara Falls City Hall, Lockport City Hall, Niagara Falls State Park and, for the first time this year, Artpark.

Michael Hibbard's original Gallo restaurant site recently reopened as Gallo Loco, serving almost a dozen different types of taco (torta or bowl), plus fajitas, quesadillas, queso nachos and salads. The interior design features an assortment of bright colors - reds, greens and oranges, among them - as well as the signature carved-metal Gallo roosters.

In a sign things are moving back to "normal," the Village of Lewiston Board moved out of the Red Brick Municipal Building gym last Thursday evening. For the first time since the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020, trustees met in the Morgan Lewis Village Boardroom.

The smell of lilacs in the backyard. Muddy knees and properly exhausted from playing outside, only to be rewarded with a freshly baked rhubarb dessert. This was spring at my grandparent's house in Niagara County. While my grandmother is now 97 years old, and she isn't baking like she used to, the younger generation is taking over in the kitchen.

On Monday, the Wheatfield Town Board honored members of the Niagara County Legislature for the services they have provided the county/town, particularly since the pandemic began. 2nd District Legislator Rebecca Wydysh, 10th District Legislator David Godfrey and 7th District Legislator Jesse Gooch were issued signed proclamations to commemorate their dedication to the area.

Lewiston Stone House owner Emery Simon intends to build a patio in front of his bar and restaurant at 755 Center St. Plans call for seating of about 20 guests inside of a gated rectangle atop the existing sidewalk. Simon will add a new, larger walkway behind the seating area, replacing what is now a small section of grass.
