Speaking Friday on LCTV, Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh said, "From my perspective, I don't see any reason that Western New York should not begin phase two next week; and it appears that we are on target to do so."
Niagara-Wheatfield BOE gets set for budget vote; outlines graduation plans

On May 20, the Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held its last budget discussions before this week's upcoming public budget hearing and board elections. Amid funding shortfalls from the state, the board is set to propose a $77,119,627 budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year, a 3.66% increase from last year. Superintendent Daniel Ljiljanich and Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Management Allison Davis outlined strategies the district will use to cover the budget, including a 1.49% increase on the tax levy.

At a Saturday press conference, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said state regions could enter phase two of his "New York Forward" reopening process earlier than expected. Originally, he said locations would have to wait two weeks before going into the next stage.

On Monday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement that, beginning Tuesday, Western New York could officially enter phase one of the state's reopening plan. The announcement came after local officials said the area had fulfilled the final requirements for reopening. These required metrics dictated that the area needed to secure 521 contact tracers, and have hospitalizations and deaths fall (or at least remain low) over three days.
Town of Niagara: Proposed Lockport Road solar project moves forward

Plans involving a proposed solar energy facility on Lockport Road took a few steps forward at Wednesday night's Town of Niagara regular board meeting. The project first gained traction at last month's board meeting, after board members authorized Supervisor Lee Wallace to sign a non-binding letter of intent. The letter allowed solar energy firm Nexamp Inc. to begin a study for a proposed solar energy project at a former Niagara landfill property owned by the Town of Niagara and located at 4798 Lockport Road.

Lewiston Council on the Arts regretfully announces the cancelation of this year's summer events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Bug Fest," the "Summer of '69," the "Blue Monday" concert series and the Lewiston Art Festival and KeyBank Chalkwalk Competition will return in 2021.

In the early weeks of the lockdown, Niagara County Legislator Jesse Gooch knew he wanted to do something for his district's senior community. He partnered up with local food truck vendor J&L Boulevard BBQ to begin "Meals with Heart from 6 Feet Apart" to offer seniors $5 dinners (pickup only) from 5-6 p.m. each Wednesday at the Wheatfield Town Hall, 2800 Church Road.

In a YouTube update Monday, Poloncarz said, "Western New York has met five of the seven metrics, pursuant to the date that was received from Western New York. ... The two things that we have not yet met, which is our hospitalization declines, over a 14-day period or a three-day average, as well as hospitalization deaths over a 14-day period or an average."
New sewer line to be connected

When John C. Whitney, P.E., joined the Town of Grand Island's Department of Engineering & Water Resources in 1986, the force main sewer line from the South Grand Island Bridge to Whitehaven Road was only 8 years old. After 42 years of service, that line is now being replaced due to its deteriorated condition.

Buffalo Launch Club offers takeout orders and new menu items

The Buffalo Launch Club on Grand Island followed the state and county mandate for all restaurants to close its doors in mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once restaurants offered takeout and delivery services in the weeks following, the BLC began brainstorming on how it could do the same and provide opportunities for some of its furloughed restaurant staff.

Elderwood resident Joanne Bodman honored with parade to mark 100th birthday

Family and friends gathered together Monday afternoon at Elderwood Residences at Wheatfield to help Joanne Bodman celebrate her 100th birthday. A drive-by parade took place outside the front door and featured the Bergholz Fire Department, local first responders, friends and admirers.
