Beyond what it already does for Niagara County, Community Missions of Niagara Frontier is literally taking a step toward serving its community - several steps, in fact. On Saturday, May 5, the organization will host its annual "Walk for Niagara" at Whirlpool State Park in Niagara Falls. The event helps to raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit organization's crisis and community service programs that provide clothing, food, shelter and other services to those in need.

NLS is a civil legal services, nonprofit organization serving low-income, disabled and other residents in need in Western New York. It is funded primarily by the Federal Legal Services Corp., the Interest on Lawyer Account Fund of the state of New York, and a grant from the New York State Assembly. Niagara Catholic High School marked 90 years on Monday with a Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. Richard J. Malone. The 66th Street School was formed out of a 1975 union between Duffy and St. Mary's/Madonna high schools.

As Western New York continues to be deluged with heavy rains coming off a weekend of ice storms, wastewater treatment plants throughout the area are now contending with excessive inflow/infiltration problems. It's the result of plants receiving excessive stormwater run-off combined with the handling of normal sewage inflow/infiltration.

On Saturday afternoon, local high school basketball talent stormed into Niagara Falls High School for the annual PAL/ACE all-star games. The day of basketball included a freshman/sophomore game, as well as a junior/senior game. Each team, for both games, included a mix of the classes. Attendees who showed paid $5 for a ticket and all proceeds earned were donated to the Niagara Police Athletic League.

On Wednesday evening, weather conditions were how they've been for majority of the spring - bitter cold and windy. Despite real feel temperatures in the low 30's, the Grand Island Vikings baseball team defeated the Niagara Falls Wolverines, 3-1.

Shortly after midnight Friday morning, March 30, at the direction of Gov. Cuomo, the Thruway Authority successfully flipped the switch on cashless tolling at the Grand Island Bridges. It was a historic occasion, as Grand Island successfully became the Thruway Authority's second cashless tolling location across its 570-mile system, the first in upstate New York.

Tuesday afternoon, the Niagara County Host Community Standing Committee, which administers and oversees projects funded by Niagara River Greenway funding, held a brief meeting to hear several proposals.
