As written here before, for its size, residents in the Buffalo-Niagara area really get into St. Patrick's Day celebrations. For 2020, our little metro area ranks an impressive No. 8 nationally among the top 200 cities in the U.S. when it comes to "Best St. Patrick's Day Celebrations," according to the latest Wallet Hub findings. Among the rating criteria, Buffalo-Niagara scored a nice No. 10 ranking for St. Patrick's Day traditions, a No. 29 rank for our weather, and No. 30 for the safety and accessibility of our many celebrations.

Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper is a 30-year-old nonprofit, presiding over an area of some of the most memorable waterways in the world. It's not just Niagara Falls, the Great Lakes Erie and Ontario, rivers Niagara and Buffalo. It also encompasses the groundwater, the creeks, the riverbeds and tributaries, all of which are part of the greater Buffalo Niagara watershed.

This past weekend, another N-W wrestler etched his name into the history books, as senior Justin McDougald became the fifth Falcons wrestler to win a New York State wrestling title.

This week, Chief Judge Janet DiFiore of the New York State Court of Appeals said she felt confident the "unintended consequences" of New York's new cash bail reform law would ultimately undergo changes, allowing judges to regain the ability to hold suspects in jail who are deemed too dangerous for release.

Seventh-generation aerialist Nik Wallenda will attempt his most ambitious highwire walk yet when he ascends to the top of the Masaya volcano in Nicaragua. "Volcano Live! with Nik Wallenda" will air at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, on ABC (WKBW-TV Channel 7). This will be Wallenda's highest and farthest wire walk.

On Tuesday night at North Tonawanda's Common Council Meeting, Mayor Arthur Pappas commented on the lack of communication between officials in the City of North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda, in regard to the upcoming Canal Fest, an annual summer festival featuring rides, games and fireworks on the border of the two cities overlooking the Erie Canal.

For the past three years, I've organized the "Light it up for Lymphedema" campaign for the New York State Chapter of the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN). The campaign encourages sites around the state and Canada to glow in teal each March 6, World Lymphedema Day, to raise awareness of lymphedema (LE) and lymphatic diseases (LD), chronic swelling conditions that have no cures. If left untreated, LE and LD can lead to deformities, infections and death.

A quick Google search will show the word "empower" means to give someone the authority or power to do something; or make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights. Similar words of both definition, from that same search include: authorize, emancipate, unshackle and permit. Bearing this in mind might explain why United Cerebral Palsy Association of Niagara County Inc. took it on as its nomenclature and became Empower in 2015.

Pre-K is starting up for Niagara-Wheatfield School District. To be held at the Bunny Bunch Day Care, the classes have already filled 120 spaces in nine classes, but there are 21 slots remaining for parents to register their children. Best of all, the classes are free.
