The Wheatfield Town Board held a brief special meeting via Zoom on Monday. Among the announcements, the board declared an end to the town's state of emergency put in place due to the coronavirus. A request from a local softball league to utilize town playing fields was also denied.

Although initially thought to be included in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's phase four reopening plans, this week malls across the state learned they would have to remain closed for now. During the governor's press briefing on Wednesday, Cuomo said state health officials would continue to "study malls, movie theaters and gyms," as concerns rise that air conditioning systems could propel a resurgence of the coronavirus.

As first reported here last week, the Village of Lewiston does intend to hold its annual Fourth of July fireworks show at dusk on Saturday, July 4. This is assuming Western New York is in phase four of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's "New York Forward" reopening plan, which is expected to happen on Tuesday, June 30.

As social contact restrictions impacting businesses from the coronavirus pandemic continue to lessen, slowly but surely bars and restaurants throughout the River Region are getting back into operations. Currently in place is phase two, allowing for outdoor, on-premises service of food/alcoholic beverages. Phase three will enable the indoor service of food/alcoholic beverages. It is expected to begin locally on Tuesday, June 16.

With the Niagara-Wheatfield School Board election set to take place on Tuesday, June 9, candidates were given the opportunity to briefly speak to residents about their platforms and qualifications. In total, there are five candidates looking to fill three seats. Two of those seats are held by incumbents Darren Sneed and Jason Myers who are seeking reelection. The third is being vacated by board member Gina Terbot who will not seek reelection after serving on the board for six years.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education on Monday held a virtual public hearing on Zoom regarding the proposed $77,119,627 budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year. While the figures represent a 3.66% increase from last year, the board said most of that will be paid through reserves the district has on hand. The board also discussed plans to continue its popular grab-and-go food service through the end of June, and weighed in on whether the district should continue the program throughout the summer.
