With the dedication of the Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial scheduled for June 5, 2021, its expansion project committee decided to take fundraising initiatives to a new level this week through and continue it through the end of the year. The goal is to complete fundraising needs by raising $100,000.

Mondays are normally a day of virtual learning for all students in the hybrid model. With the Veterans Day holiday on Wednesday, there will be no virtual day this week. Hybrid students in the green group will be on campus on Monday and Tuesday, while students in the white group will be on campus Thursday and Friday. The district will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

Happy Halloween, boys and ghouls! This week at Lewiston-Porter was filled with spirited activities across the district as students celebrated School Spirit Week. Activities included dress up days and virtual events, including Halloween celebrations, bringing the whole school community together.

This has been a big year for acquisitions and received donations. The museum collection has now tripled in size. Earlier this year, I acquired some local artwork from the Cary and Baker estate collections. Also, another signed print from Thomas Hanover, along with some other rare engravings, which are on display in the village boardroom.

On Wednesday, Congressman Brian Higgins and City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino joined Pinnacle Community Services, Community Missions of Niagara Frontier, the Homeless Alliance of Western New York and other community partners to announce over $1.22 million toward the coordinated community effort to address youth homelessness in Niagara County.

On Wednesday, local officials were on hand as Heart, Love & Soul food pantry cut the ribbon on the newly constructed Sr. Beth Brosmer Center. The center will house its new Daybreak program - a collaboratively designed one-stop program involving more than 30 partner agencies. The organization says the Daybreak program will increase access to services and offer additional support for people experiencing homelessness.

Earlier this week, New York state's movie theater industry breathed a collective sigh of relief as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced theaters across the state (except for NYC) could finally begin to reopen. Per state safety guidelines, theaters can only maintain a 25% capacity; with no more than 50 people in front of each movie screen.

Center Street construction projects were delayed last spring by the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent "New York State on PAUSE" executive orders. As summer approached and some restrictions were lifted, people expected to see a rush of activity on the village's main thoroughfare.

The Town of Niagara added a message regarding Military Road school to its website on Thursday. The school, which closed in 1992, was all but burned down in 2019 as the result of arson. It has remained an eyesore for residents ever since.

Plans are in place for the bandshell in Academy Park to move from the northwest corner of Center Street and Portage Road to the southwest end across from Syros Restaurant and Warren's Village Hardware at Portage Road and Cayuga Street. The stage will face the field.

Recently, Niagara Wheatfield High School celebrated the completion of its new multipurpose athletic field. The project, which was estimated to cost $7.6 million, included an all-new synthetic turf field and is able to accommodate football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. The project also included new bleachers (able to seat 2,000 home and 500 away fans), scoreboards, lights, fencing and backstops.

On Tuesday, the Wheatfield Town Board formally received its 2021 tentative budget, which includes a small tax increase attributed to rising garbage collection costs. Budget Director Ed Mongold was on hand for a brief presentation where he explained some of the developments.

Lewiston-Porter celebrates the return of sports to our campus. For the fall season, varsity/JV soccer (boys/girls), varsity golf (boys/girls), varsity tennis (girls), and varsity cross-country (boys/girls) are all on. Athletics move forward in a limited fashion, in alignment with the Niagara Frontier League and following strict state guidelines.
