Town accountant files defamation suit against councilman

On Jan. 28, Pamela Barton, the Town of Grand Island's senior accountant, filed a lawsuit against Town Councilman Mike Madigan and the Town of Grand Island, alleging Madigan placed a defamatory article in the Sept. 17, 2021, issue of the Island Dispatch. Statements in the article, she alleges, "have no basis in fact" and were "made with actual malice in disregard to plaintiff." She also alleges Madigan made defamatory comments during a Town Board workshop session on Sept. 7, 2021, and Sept. 20, 2021.

Residents request Lewiston board rename roadway 'Sutherland Street'

Lewiston lost one of its strongest champions when Bruce Sutherland passed Dec. 27. Three days after the former deputy mayor's death, Tom Deal of Deal Realty suggested a portion of South Sixth be renamed "Sutherland Street." Bruce would often hold court from his house, and he and his wife, Jackie, were popular among neighbors.

Village of Lewiston Board members were pleased with the Department of Public Works' response to the nearly 2 feet of snow that accumulated from Sunday night into Monday morning. Situated in the heart of the village at the southwest corner of South Fifth and Plain streets, the house consists of two wings. The first wing, or north section (along Plain), is a large rectangular wing with a center chimney built in 1817 by David Smith. He was the minister for the first Religious Society in Lewiston, first minister of the Presbyterian Church, and also a founder for the first Episcopal congregation.

It was a frosty and windy Monday morning with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees. Along Whitehaven Road and into the parking lot of the Nike Base, cars were lined up. Over the weekend, the drivers of those cars found out that the Golden Age Center was to be a distribution point for sets of KN95 masks and COVID-19 at-home antigen test kits. Each household was entitled to receive two home testing kits, containing two tests each.

Lewiston Board approves rezoning PUD for Northridge Drive

As part of its final audit/regular meeting session of 2021 last week, the Lewiston Town Board opened with a public hearing en route to moving on a conceptual plan for an existing planned unit development. The action included a rezoning of the land area from R-1 (single family residential) to PUD status on Northridge Drive and Ridge Road, and now allows for an additional 10 units to the Northridge Drive apartments complex.
