AAA: National average gas price drops

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.86, down 2 cents from last week. One year ago, the price was $2.02. The New York state average is $2.91 - no change from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.34.

Flags to half-staff in honor of State Trooper

Andrew Cuomo on Saturday ordered flags on state government buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of New York State Trooper Joseph Gallagher, who died from injuries he suffered three years ago when he was struck by a vehicle while on duty assisting a disabled motorist. Earlier this week, all of Western New York's Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) together called on New York to reverse or delay the 340B "carve out" included in the 2021 state budget, which is currently being negotiated. The 340B "carve out," they said, "would mean a devastating loss in funding for the region's most vulnerable and traditionally marginalized patients, which include communities of color, individuals living with HIV, refugees and the LGBTQ+ community."
Legal Aid files lawsuit to secure New Yorkers in prison access to COVID-19 vaccine

The Legal Aid Society has filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker on behalf of three persons incarcerated in New York state prisons, "demanding the state grant people in custody the same access to the COVID-19 vaccine that has been afforded others in virtually every other congregate residential setting - settings which by their very nature place individuals at high risk for contracting and transmitting the virus that causes COVID-19."

NYS: Nearly $15 million to support water quality conservation projects

Use along the Erie Canalway Trail and Champlain Canalway Trail increased in 2020, according to the 2020 "Who's on the Trail" report from Parks & Trails New York and the New York State Canal Corp. The Canalway Trail system as a whole saw an estimated 4.2 million visits in 2020, including just under 4 million visits to the 360-mile Erie Canalway Trail between Albany and Buffalo, and approximately 288,000 visits to the 90-mile Champlain Canalway Trail between Waterford and Whitehall.

DEC warns aquarium owners about invasive zebra mussels found in 'moss balls'

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is urging pet and aquarium stores and consumers to immediately remove and properly dispose of commercially purchased "moss balls" for aquariums after invasive zebra mussels were discovered inside and on some of these products, as reported by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Consumers should be advised that moss ball products purchased from PetSmart and Petco may be subject to a voluntary product recall.
