Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced up to $50 million in available funding for school districts to improve student access to mental health resources and assist students who have experienced trauma that has impacted their education. A request for proposals has been issued by the New York State Office of Mental Health, who will administer the program.

His request comes as Canada is preparing to announce plans to drop the existing testing requirement for vaccinated travelers entering the country through airports and land ports, effective April 1.
SBA: Key policy change to existing COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan program

On Tuesday, Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, directed the SBA to provide additional deferment of principal and interest payments for existing COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program borrowers. That makes a total of 30 months deferment from inception on all approved COVID-19 EIDL loans.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced her order requiring masks to be worn indoors throughout New York state will end on Thursday. Her "mask mandate" was implemented Dec. 10 in an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus - particularly the delta and omicron variants. Hochul said infection numbers and related hospitalizations are now back to a pre-"winter surge" level, allowing a lessening of the restrictions.
NCDOH offers free rapid COVID-19 testing in Niagara Falls

The Niagara County Department of Health (NCDOH) announced free rapid coronavirus testing will be available for all Niagara County residents. Starting, Wednesday, Feb. 9, testing will be offered at the Doris W. Jones, Family Resource Center at 3001 Ninth St., Niagara Falls. Testing will be available from 9 a.m. noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Non-US individuals will need to be vaccinated to enter country at borders

Beginning Jan. 22, the Department of Homeland Security will require non-U.S. individuals seeking to enter the U.S. via land ports of entry and ferry terminals at the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and provide related proof of vaccination. These new restrictions will apply to non-U.S. individuals who are traveling for both essential and nonessential reasons. They will not apply to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or U.S. nationals.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the federal government has launched a new website for Americans to request at-home COVID-19 test kits delivered to their homes free of charge. The website, www.covidtests.gov, is now live in beta test phase. The program officially launches on Wednesday. Residents can begin ordering their tests today.
NCCC COVID testing site reopens

It was a frosty and windy Monday morning with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees. Along Whitehaven Road and into the parking lot of the Nike Base, cars were lined up. Over the weekend, the drivers of those cars found out that the Golden Age Center was to be a distribution point for sets of KN95 masks and COVID-19 at-home antigen test kits. Each household was entitled to receive two home testing kits, containing two tests each.
