Omicron variant has been detected in Erie County, UB scientists report

The highly transmissible omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has been detected in Erie County, University at Buffalo scientists and Erie County health officials reported Wednesday. The variant was found in virus samples, analyzed by a UB team that has been sequencing the virus in the region, of Western New Yorkers who tested positive this month.
Hochul announces $230 million in additional food assistance for New Yorkers in December

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for December. All households participating in SNAP - including those already at the maximum level of benefits - will receive a supplemental allotment later this month, bringing in roughly $230 million in federal funding into the state's economy this month, and more than $2.4 billion since January.

Her team said, "So far, the cases appear unrelated and have been confirmed through sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. At its December meeting, the board of directors of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) on Thursday discussed the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and how best to work with the state to tailor response actions to the needs of local communities. The NYSAC board, which includes county leaders from every part of the state, discussed the widely varying rates of vaccinations, positive cases, hospital capacity, and death.
