Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $100 million is available for counties to help homeless individuals and families leave the shelter system for a permanent home by providing rental assistance. The funds may also help very-low-income New Yorkers pay their rent and increase their housing security.

Based on New York State Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, the Niagara County Department of Health is announcing a change to its COVID-19 quarantine requirements. Effective immediately, Niagara County will implement the "test out of quarantine" strategy for all county residents.

Gov. Kathy Hochul today announced the detection of three more confirmed cases of the COVID-19 omicron variant in New York, for a total of eight confirmed cases. Her team said, "So far, the cases appear unrelated and have been confirmed through sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. All three of the new cases are from New York City, for a total of seven New York City residents, and one from Suffolk County, confirmed to have the omicron variant."

At its December meeting, the board of directors of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) on Thursday discussed the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and how best to work with the state to tailor response actions to the needs of local communities. The NYSAC board, which includes county leaders from every part of the state, discussed the widely varying rates of vaccinations, positive cases, hospital capacity, and death.

As town supervisor of the Town of Grand Island, I cannot place my support behind the mandatory mask mandate issued by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. Personally, I wear a mask where required and support vaccinations. However, I feel that the mandate will damage our businesses by forcing our residents to cross the bridge to Niagara County, where the mandate doesn't exist.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday announced "urgent action" to boost hospital capacity and address staffing shortages ahead of potential spikes in COVID-19 cases this upcoming winter. Through an executive order signed by Hochul, the Department of Health will be allowed to limit nonessential, nonurgent procedures for in-hospitals or systems with limited capacity to protect access to critical health care services.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, at a breakfast hosted by the Association for a Better New York, announced a State University of New York and City University of New York program called the Nurses For Our Future Scholarship that will cover tuition for 1,000 new health care workers to get RNs at SUNY and CUNY. The program comes in an effort to help address the shortage in health care and lack of workers in hospitals around the state.
