New York Attorney General Letitia James recently issued a consumer alert to New Yorkers concerning potential price-gouging of over-the-counter coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing products for at-home use, as well as other in-demand essential products. This alert, her office stated, "comes in light of a surge of COVID-19 cases due to the omicron variant, which has resulted in the rise of New Yorkers seeking to use at-home testing kits before gathering with friends and loved ones for the holidays."

Gov. Kathy Hochul recently signed a package of legislation designed to improve New York's response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This legislative package will "take a major step forward in the state's efforts to increase vaccination rates and study the effects this pandemic has had on our economy and health care system," her office stated.

The highly transmissible omicron variant of the novel coronavirus has been detected in Erie County, University at Buffalo scientists and Erie County health officials reported Wednesday. The variant was found in virus samples, analyzed by a UB team that has been sequencing the virus in the region, of Western New Yorkers who tested positive this month.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for December. All households participating in SNAP - including those already at the maximum level of benefits - will receive a supplemental allotment later this month, bringing in roughly $230 million in federal funding into the state's economy this month, and more than $2.4 billion since January.

Gov. Kathy Hochul today announced the detection of three more confirmed cases of the COVID-19 omicron variant in New York, for a total of eight confirmed cases. Her team said, "So far, the cases appear unrelated and have been confirmed through sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. All three of the new cases are from New York City, for a total of seven New York City residents, and one from Suffolk County, confirmed to have the omicron variant."

At its December meeting, the board of directors of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) on Thursday discussed the ongoing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, and how best to work with the state to tailor response actions to the needs of local communities. The NYSAC board, which includes county leaders from every part of the state, discussed the widely varying rates of vaccinations, positive cases, hospital capacity, and death.

As town supervisor of the Town of Grand Island, I cannot place my support behind the mandatory mask mandate issued by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz. Personally, I wear a mask where required and support vaccinations. However, I feel that the mandate will damage our businesses by forcing our residents to cross the bridge to Niagara County, where the mandate doesn't exist.
