Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Saturday announced the state is expanding diagnostic testing criteria to include more frontline New York workers - a direct result of rapidly increasing diagnostic testing capacity. The expanded criteria will now allow all first responders, health care workers and essential employees to be tested for COVID-19 even if they aren't symptomatic. The state will continue to expand testing criteria as testing capacity increases.

The New York State Department of Labor on Saturday announced it has distributed $3.1 billion in unemployment benefits to New Yorkers since the coronavirus pandemic started impacting New York businesses in early March. In total, more than 1.4 million New Yorkers have submitted completed applications for unemployment benefits since the crisis began, including traditional unemployment insurance and pandemic unemployment assistance.

Niagara Community Action Program Inc., under the Community Child Care Resource and Referral Program, applauds the action of the governor's administration in developing a plan to provide child care to essential workers at no cost. This allocation of funding for child care for essential workers comes to the state from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (the "CARES Act"), which has provided New York with $163.6 million in emergency relief to the child care system.

After seeing a post on Facebook about a donation to Mount St. Mary's from Brickyard Pub & BBQ, Californian Rosemary Miklitsch reached out to the Lewiston restaurant to match the previous donation of 250 meals. As it turns out, Rosemary grew up in Lewiston, and her grandfather, Dr. George Berry, was a doctor at MSM many years ago. Rosemary's parents also received care at Mount St. Mary's.

New York Attorney General Letitia James sent letters to 35 of New York's major mortgage servicers, calling on them to provide immediate and long-term relief to all New York homeowners struggling to pay mortgages amidst the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The letters emphasize the responsibility of mortgage servicers to do more to ensure that COVID-19 does not cause unnecessary foreclosures or increase homelessness in New York.

Farmworker safety is important year-round, but the needs are paramount at this time as farms work to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. New York Farm Bureau has written a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo asking for additional state assistance to address the needs of the agricultural community. This would include inter-agency coordination related to testing, medical treatment and emergency housing for farmworkers, who are essential to agricultural production.

Congressman Brian Higgins voted in favor of a coronavirus emergency package that provides relief to health care providers, expands the Paycheck Protection Program to keep small businesses afloat and employees working, and funds testing capacity toward the goal of restarting the economy. Beginning today, WellNow Urgent Care is offering two types of COVID-19 testing at its Western New York facilities: molecular polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and blood antibody serology testing. Niagara University's Border Community SERVICE program is leading an effort distribute face masks to seniors in the Niagara Region. The organization is focused on enhancing regional emergency preparedness. It solicited the participation of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) members, and partnered with the volunteer group Operation Sewing Squad - Flattening the WNY Curve to make the masks, which it has distributed to local organizations that help the senior and other vulnerable populations in the county.

A week ago, The Billoni family and Colvin Cleaners announced they were bringing back their tailors and seamstresses who were laid off due to COVID-19 to make reusable, washable face masks for their customers and local nonprofit agencies. Within an hour of this announcement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced everyone in New York is required to wear a facemask when out in public.
