Houses of worship can reopen

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday announced houses of worship - churches, mosques and synagogues - can reopen to 25% capacity in phase two regions. Previously, the governor said these institutions couldn't reopen until phase four of his "New York Forward" reopening plan.

Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino has arranged for Niagara County Emergency Services to host a drive-thru event for sanitizer and/or cloth face coverings for pickup to help assist local businesses in the Niagara Falls area. This event will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at Niagara Falls High School.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced New York state has reached the lowest number of deaths and hospitalizations since the COVID-19 pandemic began. On Thursday, 42 people in New York passed away due to COVID-19, down from a record-high of 800 just eight weeks ago. The number of total hospitalizations was down to 2,728 from a record-high of 18,825 during the peak of the pandemic.

The Western New York COVID-19 Community Response Fund, announced it has awarded nearly $1 million to an additional 47 nonprofit organizations, bringing the total grant amount from the fund to $6.6 million, supporting a total of 156 nonprofit organizations. This collaborative philanthropic effort was created in mid-March in response to the COVID-19 health crisis and has been coordinated by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, Health Foundation for Western & Central New York, The John R. Oishei Foundation and the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County.

On Saturday, May 23, Niagara County Community College hosted a virtual commencement celebration for the Class of 2020, recognizing over 900 graduates. The prerecorded video allowed graduates to submit a photo of themselves, future plans, and messages of appreciation to friends and family. Additionally, the video included remarks from SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson, and NCCC President William Murabito.
