State agencies announce $1 million in funding available to support new farmers

Empire State Development and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets announced $1 million in funding is available to assist early-stage farmers through the New York State New Farmers Grant Fund. The program, now in its fifth year, promotes growth and development in the state's agriculture industry. To date, $3.27 million has been awarded to nearly 90 farms throughout New York to expand their operations and improve their profitability.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday announced approximately $585.2 million in low-cost, tax-exempt bonds has been issued through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York on behalf of 56 school districts. This financing is the largest pooled school district issuance in DASNY history.

Rob Ortt presented $40,000 in education funds to five local museums from across Niagara County for improvements in educational programs currently offered, as well as the addition of new educational resources. Joining the host of the event, the Niagara Aerospace Museum, was the Herschell Carousel Factory Museum, the Historical Society of North German Settlements in WNY, the Historical Association of Lewiston, and the Sanborn Area Historical Society.

On June 1, 10-year-old Gavin Burns was injured in a lawnmower accident at his home in Lewiston. Mercy Flight took him to Oishei Children's Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors were able to save Gavin's leg, but, unfortunately, they were not able to save his foot, which had to be amputated just above his ankle.
