The holidays may be the most wonderful time of the year, but many serious household accidents occur in December. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), on average, there are about 160 decorating-related injuries each day during the holiday season, with almost half of the incidents involving falls.

Niagara Falls firefighters delivered bags of toys to the Niagara County Courthouse rotunda right before the meeting of the County Legislature on Tuesday night. This was in support of the Christmas giving tree, where collections support Casey House Shelter, Twin Cities Outreach and the Salvation Army.

Despite bitter cold temperatures, myriad residents and visitors lined Center Street Sunday evening to watch the second annual Lewiston Christmas Lights Parade. The roughly 60-minute event featured colorful floats, dancers, first responders and local leaders doing their part to make the season, well, brighter.

More than 100 riders joined together for the American Stroke Association's CycleNation event Wednesday at ADPRO Sports Training Center. The ride boosts mental and physical health while raising critical funds to stop the cycle of stroke across the nation. Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the U.S., and the leading cause of disability in older age.

Every December, the Col. Wm. Bond/Jesse Hawley House (c. 1825) - the oldest brick building in Lockport - is turned into a wonderland of 19th century holiday decorations. Members of the public are invited to visit the Bond House on the evening of Dec. 1 for a free annual holiday event called "A Winter's Fest Eve."

Amidst a snowstorm and advisory alerts in Niagara Falls and throughout Western New York, Niagara Falls National Heritage Area had a "We are the Community'' breakfast on Saturday, celebrating four completed murals on Main Street. In addition, the community's accomplishments were memorialized through a "We are the Community'' photo, bringing attention to their efforts in an area needing revitalization.

"Kenan Christmas Village" is once again planned in celebration of the 41st annual Kenan Arts Council holiday gift show on Nov. 19 and 20. A family-focused event, "Kenan Christmas Village" will offer a variety of activities to kick off the holiday season. It will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Earlier this week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced nearly $5 million has been awarded to 17 not-for-profit animal shelters and humane societies through the fourth round of the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund. The funding will support construction, renovation and expansion projects that will provide animal care.

Empire State Development announced that Americarb Inc., a leading global producer of carbon and graphite advanced materials, plans to add 45 jobs and invest $6 million in its Niagara Falls plant. The investment will be used to purchase and install new machinery and equipment utilized in the manufacturing of high-temp composite material for the production of clean hydrogen, and in aerospace and defense applications.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced a federal grant totaling $249,369 awarded to the University at Buffalo.
