Buffalo Black Achievers launches Black Quotes Campaign

The Giving Project has teamed up with Buffalo Black Achievers to raise funds and awareness for the Black Achiever Scholarship Fund, established at the recommendation of Dr. Catherine Collins, who currently serves as the chairperson of Buffalo Black Achievers. The Black Quotes Campaign features a series of T-shirts from prominent black leaders with inspirational quotes on work ethic.
NU folklorist Edward Yong Jun Millar awarded fellowship from Library of Congress' American Folklife Center

Niagara University folklorist Edward Yong Jun Millar recently received an Archie Green Fellowship from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to document and preserve the stories, experiences, knowledge and traditions of workers involved with the Ransomville Speedway. His is one of only seven projects in 2020 to have been awarded this competitive annual national fellowship.

The Lewiston Lions understands local food pantries are under tremendous pressure, with increased demand and decreased donations. The club was able to make donations to several food pantry locations during quarantine: Care-N-Share (Inter Community Services), Word of Life Ministries and the Magdalene Project. In addition to a monetary donation, 40 face masks were also donated to the Word of Life Ministries for distribution to those who may need one.

Cuomo announces construction milestone for historic Carousel project at Canalside

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the start of timber construction on the Buffalo Heritage Carousel project at Canalside. The project consists of a new building near the corner of Prime and Perry streets to house the near-century-old De Angelis Carousel. The carousel is planned to open in the summer of 2021.

Family Promise of Western New York, an emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness, has completed critical upgrades to its shelter facility and is reopening for intakes in August with double the capacity. This reopening is in anticipation of predicted mass evictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and unemployment throughout the region. Improvements include private family units, additional bathrooms and a fire safety system.

Spirit of Buffalo and Buffalo River History Tours announced the launch of the "Big Kahuna," a tiki tour boat docked at Canalside. The boat is the latest to be added to the fleet of Buffalo River History Tours and will carry passengers on daily fun-filled 90- or 60-minute tours on the Buffalo River, Buffalo Harbor and Lake Erie with Caribbean-style music and drinks - all while maintaining social distancing rules.
New downtown mural welcomes visitors to Niagara Falls USA

A colorful new mural can be seen on the side of the Wine on Third building, located at 501 Third St., Niagara Falls, facing Ferry Avenue. The postcard-inspired mural, "Greetings from Niagara Falls," was conceived and painted by local freelance artist Paul Clifton. It was commissioned by the Downtown Niagara Falls Business Association (DNFBA) as a way to showcase Niagara County activities and welcome guests to Niagara Falls USA.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced the New York State Department of Health, in consultation with the Reimagine Education Advisory Council and others, is finalizing guidance on the possible reopening of schools in September. New York state previously directed all school districts to develop reopening plans. A decision on whether to reopen schools in September has not been made yet.
New 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' exhibit at History Center of Niagara

The History Center of Niagara has a brand-new exhibit on display on the first floor of its Outwater Building, 215 Niagara St, Lockport. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, this exhibition, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," shows the rich history of baseball and the PONY League (Pennsylvania, Ontario and New York) all throughout Niagara County.

The Buffalo City Mission received a $20,000 donation from Citi, in collaboration with the National Disability Institute (NDI), to help advance its work with the homeless community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The City Mission is one of just 39 national community-based nonprofit organizations to receive a share of a $1 million donation from Citi, which is helping organizations provide direct services to low-income people with disabilities.
USAN announces start of construction on Third Street connector to Niagara Falls State Park

USA Niagara Development Corp. and New York State Parks announced the start of construction of a new pedestrian entry into Niagara Falls State Park. Located at 305 Buffalo Ave., on the corner of Third Street and Buffalo Avenue, the entry goes through a vacant parcel purchased by USAN through the Buffalo Billion strategic land acquisition program. The program provides funding to acquire vacant or underutilized properties near Niagara Falls State Park.

Empire State Development (ESD) and Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) on Friday detailed the $100 million "New York Forward" loan fund announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, aimed at providing working capital loans to small businesses focusing on MWBEs, small landlords and nonprofit organizations that did not receive funding from the Small Business Administration's Paycheck Protection Program and economic injury disaster loans. The fund will target those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including small businesses and nonprofit organizations with 20 or fewer employees, and small landlords who own small multifamily rental portfolios.
