The Town of Niagara Lions Club Inc., beginning its 65th year of service to the community, has announced the Lee Corra Scholarship Award for the 2018 school year is up for grabs. Application forms can be picked up from counseling offices at Niagara-Wheatfield High School, Niagara Catholic High School or for Town of Niagara residents attending a different high school, or by contacting Chairman Theresa White on the Town of Niagara Facebook page.

Congressman Chris Collins applauded President Donald Trump's budget proposal, which includes funding for a state-of-the-art fitness facility at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Last year, Collins corresponded with the Air Force to request funding for this facility be expedited to be included in the fiscal year 2019 budget instead of the original proposal for FY21.

On Jan. 24, members and officers from Niagara County Central, Niagara Falls USA, Albion, and Grand Island Rotary clubs, as well as the leadership from District 7090 gathered at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn. The groups wanted to meet the new leadership of the college and give them a welcome to Niagara County.

With great sadness, Sheriff James R. Voutour announced Saturday the sudden passing of Niagara County Sheriff's Office canine EJ, handled by his partner Deputy Richard Bull. On Jan. 19, Bull, his handler, discovered EJ unresponsive inside his kennel.

H & M, Hennes and Mauritz Inc., one of the world's largest fashion retailers, has announced a new location in Niagara Falls. Measuring approximately 21,000 square feet, the new location at Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls is set to open this summer. H&M officials said they have experienced a warm welcome from customers and fans in New York and are happy to continue to expand store and employee counts in the state.

This past summer, former Town of Wheatfield Supervisor Bob Cliffe announced he wouldn't be running for re-election. This decision opened up a seat as the town's supervisor. As with any government job, the supervisor's job is difficult and can be strenuous. People wondered who would step into Cliffe's spot. In comes Don MacSwan.

On Tuesday night, North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur Pappas announced the next round of Hometown Heroes banners to be revealed in the city. The banners are now open to all veterans and not just active duty members. This year the American Legion Sikora Post 1322 recognized MM2 Stephen Sikora, U.S. Navy; Sgt. John Lukasik, U.S. Army Corps; and PFC Stanley Maziarz, U.S. Army.

On Dec. 19, 20 and 21, the Town of Niagara Recreation Department will host Christmas week at the Calvin K. Richards Senior/Youth Activity Center, 7000 Lockport Road. The three days of events will include Christmas activities for children and families to enjoy.

There were five categories of gingerbread houses: amateur division, children's division, college division, high school division and professional division.

At last Tuesday's North Tonawanda Common Council meeting, the meeting moved along rather quick, but a majority of the meeting was conducted by citizens during public input. Many of the topics discussed involved issues citizens were having in the area and felt the city should take some accountability to fix them.
