Tribune's year in high school sports

Over the past year, Niagara-Wheatfield and North Tonawanda High School have been battling on the field, with student-athletes showing pride for their respective schools. The two schools accomplished a few feats that made hometown residents proud to call the area home. With that, here is a recap of some of those accomplishments from the past year.
Rockin' With Santa campaign a success

John White, Rockin' With Santa creator, believes the holidays are a time to give back to others. Over the last month, White, alongside volunteers, did that and then some this winter.

On Tuesday night, the Town of Niagara Town Board held its final meeting of 2017. The meeting was relatively quick, but the end of the meeting held something new for Supervisor Lee Wallace.

On Dec. 11, Lake Ontario Post 313 Veterans of Foreign Wars presented recognition plaques and proclamations to Town of Niagara officials for their support of local veterans.
North Tonawanda: Hometown Heroes banners presented

On Tuesday night, North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur Pappas announced the next round of Hometown Heroes banners to be revealed in the city. The banners are now open to all veterans and not just active duty members. This year the American Legion Sikora Post 1322 recognized MM2 Stephen Sikora, U.S. Navy; Sgt. John Lukasik, U.S. Army Corps; and PFC Stanley Maziarz, U.S. Army.
Christmas week in Town of Niagara

On Dec. 19, 20 and 21, the Town of Niagara Recreation Department will host Christmas week at the Calvin K. Richards Senior/Youth Activity Center, 7000 Lockport Road. The three days of events will include Christmas activities for children and families to enjoy.
Hockey game to raise funds for scholarship

Setting up a fundraiser for a cause is no easy task. To Jordan Fox, 18, setting up a scholarship in Joey Brochey's name was an absolute must. With the hard work of Fox, there will be a memorial hockey game from 3-5 p.m. Saturday at Hyde Park Ice Pavilion.
Lineup revealed for 2018 Thunder of Niagara Air Show

The Thunder of Niagara Air Show has announced its 2018 lineup of the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, and the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbird Demonstration Team.
NCCC: Top gingerbread houses

On Monday night at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, 28 Old Falls St., Niagara Falls, there was a live auction for winning gingerbread houses judged. There were five categories of gingerbread houses: amateur division, children's division, college division, high school division and professional division.

North Tonawanda citizens raise concerns to Common Council

At last Tuesday's North Tonawanda Common Council meeting, the meeting moved along rather quick, but a majority of the meeting was conducted by citizens during public input. Many of the topics discussed involved issues citizens were having in the area and felt the city should take some accountability to fix them.

On Monday night at the Wheatfield Town Hall, the Town Board held its regular board meeting, but prior to that, it held a public hearing to discuss rezoning of a development around Forest Parkway, on the east side of Shawnee Road.
Town of Wheatfield Board approves preliminary budget

The Town of Wheatfield Town Board approved its $13,127,159 budget, with modifications to the general fund, decreasing total budget appropriations and estimated revenues by $21,210.
Girls volleyball falls in finals, future still bright

The 2017 Niagara-Wheatfield girls volleyball season was one that many will remember throughout the Falcons program. Coach Brandi Cochran's team won the Niagara Frontier League championship, lost two matches all season and reached the program's first ever Section VI championship.

Shelter in place lifted in Town of Niagara

Earlier Thursday afternoon, citizens in the Town of Niagara on Grauer Road were asked by police to shelter in place due to a police incident. The first word is the incident ended with an arrest. Also, nobody was hurt in the incident. According to nyalert.gov, the shelter in place was cancelled at 1:31 p.m. and citizens were able to resume normal activities.

On Monday night, Town of Niagara Town Board members, Charles Teixeira, Rich Sirianni, Marc Carpenter and Samuel Gatto met to discuss and look over the 2018 budget handed to them. The meeting was held to discuss differences that each board member may have with what was proposed.

Glazed gift: West Street Elementary donates to hurricane victims

On Oct. 19, the school held a doughnut sale and donated all proceeds from the fundraiser to hurricane victims. In all, the school sold all 408 doughnuts in 30 minutes, and, including donations, raised $450.
Town of Niagara: Bri Estates proposal remains topic of discussion

At the monthly Town of Niagara Town Board meeting Tuesday, citizens of the town came prepared to speak their mind on the looming Bri Estates development proposed by Double C Realty, which would place over 100 homes behind residents of Colonial Drive and Miller Road.

During the Town of Wheatfield Town Board meeting Monday, agenda motions were approved as normal. After the agenda motions, the board went into  member items. Here, councilman Larry Helwig announced to the crowd that if the board or town officials hadn't responded to a citizen email, there was a reason.

NT opens new youth center

The North Tonawanda Youth Center had its grand opening on Saturday in front of numerous families and NT Mayor Arthur Pappas. The center, located at The Hope Center, 383 Vandervoort St., gave tours of the new facility and welcomed NT residents with popcorn, pizza and various activities.

Cuomo announces winners of Western New York Smart Growth Community Fund

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday announced four Western New York communities have been selected to receive up to $10 million in funding from the Buffalo Billion II initiative. The City of Dunkirk, City of North Tonawanda, City of Lackawanna and Village of Gowanda are recipients of Smart Growth Community Funds for projects that utilize existing infrastructure to support placemaking, walkable communities and sustainable development.

Project Pride to host fall cleanup
