Animal welfare advocates from the Voices for Shelter Animals group spoke out recently in regard to an investigation conducted at the Niagara SPCA by former Erie County SPCA Executive Director Barbara Carr, and Libby Post, executive director of New York State Animal Protection Federation. They called it a conflict of interest.

Eric Salisbury was appointed dog control officer in 2018 for the City of North Tonawanda. Since then, he's become something of a legend for the dog- and cat-loving community in the municipality. Recently, after several residents commended his service, the NT City Council awarded him a pay increase.

The program is called the BTOP Express - Better Technology, Onsite and Personal. It provides general computer training throughout the NIOGA Library System. At a recent Town Board meeting in Wheatfield, Sara Taylor, a BTOP e-mobile trainer, spoke to Supervisor Don MacSwan and councilmen regarding bringing the program to the residents, despite the town's lack of a library.

The Carnegie Art Center hosted a big night this past Thursday for its annual "Art off the Wall" event. The largest wall was covered with small 5-by-7-inch pieces of art, while the space also contained a room dedicated to 12-by-12-inch canvases and even tinted glass that were bid on silently by artists' fans.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, the Town of Niagara Lions and Lionesses will lay wreathes at Witmer Cemetery on the graves of the veterans buried there. They will honor the five branches of the military by displaying wreaths for them, as well. There are soldiers from each of the wars from 1812 on up through Korea.

The North Tonawanda mayor's office, in conjunction with the city's Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks, reported entries are currently being accepted for the city's "Decorate for the holidays contest." The contest is open to any North Tonawanda resident who decorates their home or business for the holiday season.

The Town of Niagara Town Board parted ways Thursday night after three-hours of discussing the budget. Councilmen Samuel Gatto, Marc Carpenter, and Richard Sirianni ran plans to trim budget lines to free up funds for other endeavors by Deputy Supervisor Charles Teixeira via phone. The resulting argument ended the meeting.

The 1965 Huey helicopter is a big thing to miss. It's been gone for about a year now, but no one should be alarmed. The Vietnam era helicopter and its compatriot, the massive tank in front of the Town of Wheatfield Highway Department building, will be back together again at Town Hall on Church Street. The average Town of Wheatfield homeowner, with a house assessed at $125,000, will receive an additional $9.93 on their taxes this year, according to Budget Officer Edward Mongold. While the budget has not been put in front of the residents, the 2020 tentative budget is complete and can be accessed at Town Hall. A public hearing for the budget has been scheduled at 6:45 p.m., Nov. 4.

In 2016, the Erie Niagara Sunrise Exchange Club sponsored the first Healing Field in North Tonawanda. The event was so successful, the group has scheduled another for the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Last week, the Niagara-Wheatfield School District was once again under scrutiny by the public. This time the newsworthy item was a video that showed a student at the high school being bullied by two of his peers. The student was subsequently suspended when he responded by attacking the bullies. The video quickly made its way onto social media, as well as local news stations.

That being said, some give a few dollars to the Salvation Army or visit a family member who's down with a cold. Meals on Wheels of Niagara Falls started in 1970. It was the very first local meal provider in Niagara Falls. It is a private nonprofit, meaning that it doesn't accept funding from the government, but subsists on client payments and private donations that generous individuals will often supply. The organization has been doing this for a very long time, and now they need help.
