For the past 25 years, the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS) and the civilian community have enjoyed a healthy relationship of mutual support. Niagara County Community College participated in its second annual Day of Giving on Tuesday. Thunderwolves from all over - faculty, staff, alumni, and friends - came together to give back to NCCC, raising $7,347 from 105 donors. Their donations were designated toward programs that support NCCC's students and further the college mission. Areas that were included were the NCCC annual fund, Athletic Department, honors program, horticulture program and English department.

The John R. Oishei Foundation has funded a $100,000 grant payable over three years to Niagara Area Habitat for Humanity. The grant will support the "Building Capacity to Strengthen Our Impact" initiative. It will be used to partially fund two AmeriCorps members and a part-time bookkeeper for three years.

On Nov. 10, the North Tonawanda Common Council voted 3-2 to adopt its revised 2021 budget, which includes a 3.75% property tax increase (equating to roughly $50 per $100,000 assessment). The figure is lower than the 6.52% increase called for in Mayor Arthur G. Pappas' initially proposed budget, which was heavily criticized by residents and some council members alike.

The Town of Niagara added a message regarding Military Road school to its website on Thursday. The school, which closed in 1992, was all but burned down in 2019 as the result of arson. It has remained an eyesore for residents ever since.

This year presents new ideas and challenges for the holidays. Since we are still attempting to keep the rate of COVID-19 infection low, there are new guidelines for Halloween from the CDC. Their recommendations are to avoid door-to-door trick or treating, although Gov. Cuomo did say it was allowed in NYS.

Recently, Niagara Wheatfield High School celebrated the completion of its new multipurpose athletic field. The project, which was estimated to cost $7.6 million, included an all-new synthetic turf field and is able to accommodate football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. The project also included new bleachers (able to seat 2,000 home and 500 away fans), scoreboards, lights, fencing and backstops.

At a scheduled meeting of the North Tonawanda Common Council on Tuesday, Alderman-at-Large Austin Tylec presented a resolution requesting the Niagara County Legislature to take swift action to aid the city as it prepares its already delayed budget. The sales tax revenue his city receives is expected to include a $1 million revenue gap Tylec estimates due to the economic impacts of COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the Wheatfield Town Board formally received its 2021 tentative budget, which includes a small tax increase attributed to rising garbage collection costs. Budget Director Ed Mongold was on hand for a brief presentation where he explained some of the developments.
