Schmigel announces bid for NT alderman spot

On Tuesday afternoon, Robert Schmigel announced his candidacy to seek the open seat in the first ward for the North Tonawanda Common Council. Current Alderman Mark Berube has decided not to seek re-election after winning the seat vacated by the late Russ Rizzo.

On Sunday and parts of Monday, Western New York got hit with yet another storm this winter. No snow or ice to mention, but winds blew through the area at steady speeds in the 40 mile-per-hour range, with gusts up above 70 mph. The Tribune's local municipalities - the Town of Wheatfield, Town of Niagara and City of North Tonawanda - all endured the wind's wrath and had to deal with some damage.
Wallace seeking re-election as supervisor of the Town of Niagara

Lee S. Wallace has announced he will seek re-election for the office of supervisor in the Town of Niagara. Wallace, the incumbent town supervisor, is a lifetime resident of the town and a previous town employee for more than 40 years.
Dickey announces candidacy for NT Common Council

Adam Dickey, 42, recently announced his candidacy for First Ward alderman in the City of North Tonawanda. Dickey, a 20-year member of the Ironworkers Local Union No. 9 in Niagara Falls, currently holds the position of union president.

Town of Niagara gives negative declaration for part of mall development

Tuesday night, in what Town of Niagara Supervisor Lee Wallace called record time, the Town Board held its regular meeting for the month of February. The board declared a negative declaration, which shows no harm to the environment, in accordance with the State Environmental Quality Review on part of a site plan from Mercado Development in regard to outdoor seating at a new food hall at the Fashion Outlets Mall.

On Monday, the Town of Wheatfield Town Board held its second regular session of January. Valuable information was announced from the recent formation of an emergency services department, an update from Councilman Larry Helwig and Tim Zuber of Wendel Engineers regarding the Niagara River Greenway trail, and a response from Supervisor Don MacSwan to Gov. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced nearly $4.5 million was awarded to 13 animal shelters and humane societies across the state through the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund. The funding will support construction, renovation and expansion projects that will enhance animal care and health, and help ensure adoptions for New York's dogs and cats.

After receiving several media inquiries, Sheriff James R. Voutour announced Monday that William C. Shrubsall, also known as Ethan Macleod, 47, is in the custody of the Niagara County Sheriff's Office. Shrubsall was taken into custody Monday with assistance from Canadian Border Services, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the New York State Troopers.
