The Town of Niagara added a message regarding Military Road school to its website on Thursday. The school, which closed in 1992, was all but burned down in 2019 as the result of arson. It has remained an eyesore for residents ever since.

This year presents new ideas and challenges for the holidays. Since we are still attempting to keep the rate of COVID-19 infection low, there are new guidelines for Halloween from the CDC. Their recommendations are to avoid door-to-door trick or treating, although Gov. Cuomo did say it was allowed in NYS.

Recently, Niagara Wheatfield High School celebrated the completion of its new multipurpose athletic field. The project, which was estimated to cost $7.6 million, included an all-new synthetic turf field and is able to accommodate football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. The project also included new bleachers (able to seat 2,000 home and 500 away fans), scoreboards, lights, fencing and backstops.

At a scheduled meeting of the North Tonawanda Common Council on Tuesday, Alderman-at-Large Austin Tylec presented a resolution requesting the Niagara County Legislature to take swift action to aid the city as it prepares its already delayed budget. The sales tax revenue his city receives is expected to include a $1 million revenue gap Tylec estimates due to the economic impacts of COVID-19.

At Monday's Town Board meeting, the Town of Wheatfield announced that this year's Halloween trick-or-treat hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The town recommends all participants follow state and CDC guidelines and take caution in all Halloween-associated activities.

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is holding a curbside Chiavetta's chicken dinner pick-up from 3-6 p.m. Friday Oct. 9. Dinners are $12 each in advance, and include Famous Chiavetta's Chicken, potato salad, coleslaw and a dinner. A portion of each dinner sold will help the museum to recover some of the lost event revenue the museum faces due to COVID-19.

The story surrounding the sale of a former farmland site in the Town of Niagara took a number of interesting turns this week. The Town of Niagara Farmland Conservancy says it will file a lawsuit against the George Mannoe family, the former owners of a 26-acre parcel located on the east side of Miller Road after they decided to sell to another buyer, Alexis Johnson.

Edward Tase Jr. of Lockport was elected first vice president of the Firemen's Association of the State of New York at its 148th annual convention, which was held virtually (due to COVID-19) Aug. 22. Tase has served in a number of leadership roles within FASNY, most recently as a member of its board of directors, and now assumes new statewide responsibilities on behalf of New York's volunteer fire service.

It was an eventful session at Monday's Town Board meeting in the Town of Wheatfield. Tom Kontak, a member of a local veterans group, was recognized for his efforts in the restoration of a helicopter located at the Town Hall, which now stands as a monument for veterans.

Despite the effects of the pandemic, the Town Wheatfield received a generally favorable review of its finances this week by independent auditing firm Drescher and Malecki. However, the town was cautioned to monitor its finances closely as harsh reductions in sales tax revenue and state aid funding are looming.

Last weekend, Jesse Gooch, owner of Painters Plus, several of the company's employees, and a handful of volunteers washed, primed and painted the house of Steven and Cindy Kureczka of Zimmerman Street in North Tonawanda, the chosen winners for the 10th annual Project H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Paint Exteriors). The project is an annual citywide contest that offers a free exterior home paint job to homeowners in need.
