On Thursday, New York State Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt and Assembly members Angelo Morinello and Mike Norris sent a letter requesting immediate coordination between the New York State Office of Emergency Management (SEMO), the cities of Lockport and Niagara Falls, and Niagara County, regarding flash flooding that occurred July 20. Severe rainstorms caused a significant amount of damage throughout those areas.

Visits to resume at Niagara County Correctional Facility

Niagara County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced inmate visitations will resume at the Niagara County Correctional Facility beginning Tuesday, July 27. Visitation had been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the safety of the correctional facility employees and residents.
Upcoming DOT public hearing for Niagara Falls Boulevard intersections

On July 21, the New York State Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing at the Wheatfield Community Center (2790 Church Road) related to the improvements proposed by the DOT for a pair of "dangerous" intersections along Niagara Falls Boulevard at Ward and Witmer roads. The hearing will run from 4-6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Niagara County Office for the Aging distributing farmers market coupons

The Niagara County Office for the Aging has begun distributing farmers market coupon booklets at sites throughout Niagara County. The Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program, provided by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, provides coupons to all who meet age and income requirements. Each booklet contains five coupons worth $4 each ($20 total), which can be used to buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets throughout New York.

DEC cites Cascades facility for noxious odors; company working to find long-term solution

Recently, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation served Cascades Containerboard Packaging Inc. a notice of violation after receiving numerous complaints from residents in the Town of Niagara, City of Niagara Falls and even as far away as Sanborn throughout the month of May. The agency said the company was in violation of Air Pollution Control Law, Article 19 of the Environmental Conservation Law (ECL).

USAF Civil Air Patrol cadets to raise large flag at Stavatti Niagara

USAF Civil Air Patrol cadets from the Niagara Falls Composite Squadron No. 1 will participate in raising the 15-foot stars and stripes at Stavatti's newly acquired facility at 9400 Porter Road in the Town of Niagara. The flag-raising, set for noon Sunday, June 13, will be the first time in more than 17 years that "Old Glory" is permanently flown from the 70-foot mast - since the former U.S. Army Reserve Center was closed and sold to the Town of Niagara.
Niagara County encourages Purple Heart veterans to come forward

Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski said Niagara County will once again honor Purple Heart veterans by adding their name to county's "Book of Honor" at a ceremony to be held Aug. 7. The county is asking any Purple Heart veterans or their family members who have not yet come forward to please do so by June 11 in order to be part of this year's ceremony.
