Niagara County working hard on budget, hoping to reduce tax rate

All across the media spectrum, reports show that Americans are most concerned about current economic conditions. There is a great feeling of unease as the pandemic lingers on and a rise in inflation, the likes of which we have not seen in a generation or more, drives up costs on families. I can't tell you how many conversations I have had of late about how much people paid for a gallon of gas.
Deposits for Food makes holiday donations to local pantries

Deposits for Food (D4F) recently made its annual holiday donations to four Niagara County food pantries - just in time for the holidays. Checks totaling $3,000 were presented to Community Missions, and Heart, Love & Soul of Niagara Falls on Wednesday by D4F founder Angelo Sarkees. Checks were previously given to Wilson Food Pantry and Care-N-Share Pantry of Ransomville.
NCCC board approves recognition of Native American Heritage Day

A resolution was approved by the Niagara County Community College board of trustees on Tuesday, Nov. 16, recognizing the Friday prior to Thanksgiving as Native American Heritage Day.

The Niagara County Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services announced the distribution of a community survey regarding suicide prevention in Niagara County. It said, "The survey will examine the community's awareness of resources, how to help yourself or someone you know who is experiencing thoughts of suicide, and what type of supports you would like to see available in our community."

Travel advisory: Lane closures expected on Niagara Falls Boulevard in North Tonawanda

The New York State Department of Transportation advised motorists to expect lane closures on U.S. Route 62 (Niagara Falls Boulevard) at State Route 425 (Erie Avenue and Shawnee Road) in the City of North Tonawanda, beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10. The closures are necessary to facilitate railroad crossing repair work by CSX and are expected to last one day, weather permitting.

Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski hosted a brief ceremony on Tuesday to open a display of the Niagara County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and the "Our Photo Album" exhibit featuring photos taken by Vietnam veterans during their tours of duty. The display will be open at least through Veteran's Day (Thursday, Nov. 11) at the Niagara County Courthouse in Lockport.

The mall has teamed up with the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center's breast and prostate peer education program to promote how early detection can save lives. From Monday, Oct. 18, through Friday, Oct. 22, representatives will be on-site talking with shoppers about the importance of breast health, risk factors, and signs and symptoms.
