Last week, the Niagara-Wheatfield School District was once again under scrutiny by the public. This time the newsworthy item was a video that showed a student at the high school being bullied by two of his peers. The student was subsequently suspended when he responded by attacking the bullies. The video quickly made its way onto social media, as well as local news stations.

Mayor Arthur Pappas of the City of North Tonawanda, delivered the 2020 budget to the City Council, two weeks after the official deadline of Oct. 1, and after being the recipient of a lawsuit for a 24-hour period of time, he said, because of that lateness.

Many people relish the holiday season not for what's received, whether it is a couple days off, or a few presents under a tree; for some, it's the giving nature that really makes the winter special. That being said, some give a few dollars to the Salvation Army or visit a family member who's down with a cold. Not everyone plans and executes a fund-drive for those in need, at least not this side of Facebook.

Meals on Wheels of Niagara Falls started in 1970. It was the very first local meal provider in Niagara Falls. It is a private nonprofit, meaning that it doesn't accept funding from the government, but subsists on client payments and private donations that generous individuals will often supply. The organization has been doing this for a very long time, and now they need help.

Niagara-Wheatfield Senior High School will continue to be administered by Jeffrey White for the rest of the school year following the resignation of Michael Mann, now former principal of the over 1,200 students who attend the school.

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the North Tonawanda History Museum, Karen Wielinski will present her experience in 2009 when a Continental Airlines passenger flight crashed into her home in Clarence, killing 50 passengers and her husband who was in another room of the house.

Amy Shellman started her first business almost one month ago, but it's not an ordinary store or restaurant. It's called Sunsets and Souls Boutique, and while it's located in North Tonawanda, it won't be found on Payne Avenue or Oliver Street. A good place to look though might be the local library's computers.

The Town Board of Niagara convened on Tuesday for a mere 30 minutes. During that time, the board resolved to grant Randal Sinatra a mixed-families residence zoning for his property on Laur Road, create a local law that paves the way for a possible recycling plant within the town, schedule a public hearing for the destruction of a zombie home and, of course, answer questions from citizens.

Al D'Angelo of the subdivision, Country Meadows, in the Town of Wheatfield made a plea to the Town Board to repave his street. The long-time resident who said that he was asked to represent his neighbors, noted he has been lobbying for years, but keeps getting the same answer from Highway Superintendent Paul Siegmann: "There's no money in the budget."

It started nine years ago when Jesse Gooch, owner of Painters Plus and a Niagara County legislator, decided to use his business to do some good for the community. Gooch noticed there were several houses in the community that needed an exterior paint job. Painters Plus handled jobs on similar houses and it was like a lightbulb went on. Gooch's business had all the supplies and the know-how to paint any of these houses.

The Wheatfield Lions Club invited their counterparts, the St. David Lions Club from Canada; as well as area service and business groups to a steak dinner at Five Senses Nature Park for their fifth annual Service Club Steak Night. Clubs included the Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis, Wheatfield Business Association, Town of Niagara Lions, and the Niagara County Central Rotary Club.
