In a letter to eligible graduates and college employees on Wednesday, April 1, Niagara County Community College President William J. Murabito, Ph.D., announced commencement ceremonies originally scheduled for Saturday, May 16, would be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe.

On Tuesday, the Town of Niagara was awarded nearly $600,000 in Niagara River Greenway funding for a proposed Town Square project for Veterans' Memorial Community Park, bringing the total funds provided by Greenway to upward of $1 million.

Per New York State Executive Order 202.6 issued March 27th, 2020, non-essential construction projects throughout the State are required to shut down. The Downtown Placemaking project, which began on March 24th, falls under this requirement.

On Sunday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received numerous 911 calls reporting a house fire at 2176 River Road in the Town of Wheatfield. Upon arrival of deputies, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

The Aquarium of Niagara will close to the public at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, and remain closed through 9 a.m. March 28, in response to COVID-19. All scheduled events and programs within that timeframe are cancelled.

The City of North Tonawanda has been working with the Lumber City Development Corp on a strategy called "NT Momentum." The plan is currently in phase one of its master plan for the 546-acre study area that includes properties downtown and River Road.

On Tuesday night at North Tonawanda's Common Council Meeting, Mayor Arthur Pappas commented on the lack of communication between officials in the City of North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda, in regard to the upcoming Canal Fest, an annual summer festival featuring rides, games and fireworks on the border of the two cities overlooking the Erie Canal.

This past Monday, the manager of the Wheatfield Gardens greenhouses, Paal Eflstrum, came in front of the Town Board of Wheatfield to update the board members on some of the changes he had made on the border - as documented in a letter to the town - with the Timberlakes subdivision, and asked the board for further instructions on how to be "good neighbors."

North Tonawanda's Common Council Meeting began with the "State of the City" address by Mayor Arthur Pappas. The subjects of focus for the address included development, jobs, highway and water projects, as well as the bail and discovery/speedy trial reform laws enacted at the beginning of the year by the state.

In last year's elections, Lee Wallace ran for his second term as supervisor in the Town of Niagara unopposed by any candidates for the position. The hometown politician, who said he never wanted to be a politician, is now in his fifth year of working for the town as its head.

The Kaleida Health DeGraff Memorial Tower in North Tonawanda, formerly used for inpatient care, has been listed with Pyramid Brokerage Co. to attract a developer to fill the five-story building. A crowd - standing room only - faced North Tonawanda officials at the Jan. 7 public hearing for the proposed changes to the city's sanitation program. Several residents approached the board with deep objections to the recommendations proposed by Niagara County Environmental Science Coordinator Dawn Timm and DPW Superintendent Mark Zellner.

The Town of Niagara Business & Professional Association is hosting its annual Awards Dinner for 2019 honorees on Jan. 29 at the Four Points Sheraton, 7001 Buffalo Ave. in Niagara Falls. All proceeds will go to the TNBPA Scholarship fund to help families offset the cost of college.
