Niagara-Wheatfield is now accepting online student registration for all new students. If one has a child who will enroll in the Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District this fall, they can now register online.
City of North Tonawanda begins plans for reopening

In accordance with state and county recommendations, each city or town should begin to develop a plan for reopening their municipality. Since every locality has unique entities, we need to include foresight to plan accordingly. In keeping with this directive, I have established a committee of individuals representing various interests of the city. This committee will be referred to as C.E.T., City Emergent Team.
Where is Mr. Toasters?

Mr. Toasters, a pet cockatiel who lives at 483 Harrison Ave., Tonawanda got out of the house on April 27. His family followed him until the evening of April 30, when they lost sight of him. He is currently still lost.

Niagara County: Work release program suspended

Acting Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti on Wednesday announced the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Work Release Program will not be operating until further notice. This has occurred due to the temporary layoffs agreed to by Niagara County and the Civil Service Employees Association Union.

If you listen to state and county leaders' information, you must be mindful of when we will begin to reopen. Presently, we are still under the governor's "PAUSE" order. As the number of cases in Niagara County continue to rise with 488 and 60 cases being in N.T., we have not reached the peak of infection or are even plateauing. In order to reopen, we need the rate of infection to decrease.

Niagara SBDC receives grant as part of Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation's COVID-19 small business relief fund

On Monday, the Niagara County Community College Small Business Development Center was awarded a grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation. The grant award total was for $36,300.00, part of the foundation's COVID-19 small business relief fund. Thanks to this timely funding award, the Niagara SBDC will be able to offer Niagara County businesses emergency relief services. These services include expert consultation on e-commerce development, free participation in a multiple-part small business crisis management webinar series, and individual advisement on enhanced marketing sales techniques.
Niagara-Wheatfield BOE begin budget talks amid uncertainty in state funding

The Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education held a virtual board meeting this week where they began tentative budget discussions for the 2020-21 school year. A proposed budget of $77,119,627 shows only a moderate 3.7% increase from last year. However, amidst the uncertainty brought on by COVID-19, board members will have to await the governor's decision regarding the end of the month before they can decide whether or not to move forward with the figures.

"I realize that residents' patience is extremely stressed to the limit. Three times a week, at least, I have a phone conference with Niagara County Health Department and leaders of all county towns and cities. When I pass on information to you, it is from those conferences and from the orders put out by the governor. Recommendations made and numbers given are from those agencies. I also confer with the police and fire chiefs before a recommendation is made."
Cambria resident to lead new sustainability division at NOCO

NOCO Energy recently announced the creation of a sustainability division within its commercial and residential heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) business based in Akron. The new division will focus on working with customers in the installation of energy efficiency heating and cooling units and equipment, energy efficiency consulting, LED lighting and other measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A debt of gratitude goes out to all NT police and fire employees who put their lives in peril every day for our safety. A thank you also to the auxiliary police, volunteer firefighters for their help, as well as the DPW, Parks and Rec. Department, volunteers, and grocery/medical store staff for continuing to assist us every day while isolated.
Higgins: Smith Boys Shipyard becomes first New York recipient of federal transportation small shipyard grant in a decade

Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) announced a federal grant totaling $317,641 for Smith Boys Shipyard. The award is funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation Small Shipyard Grant Program. This is the first such grant awarded to a New York operator in the past 10 years.
NCCC extends remote learning into the summer

At times like these, everyone is called on to come together and support one another. One of our highest giving priorities is providing food for people at risk of hunger. The best way to do this is by supporting local food banks that can provide food directly to people in need. Given the unknown duration and overall impact of this crisis, Wegmans is donating $4 million spread across all our partner food banks. We will continue to support our partners and adapt as needed.

Easter Bunny practicing social distancing in Niagara County

NCCC announces commencement postponement due to COVID-19

In a letter to eligible graduates and college employees on Wednesday, April 1, Niagara County Community College President William J. Murabito, Ph.D., announced commencement ceremonies originally scheduled for Saturday, May 16, would be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe.

Town of Niagara to receive almost $600,000 in Greenway funding for Veterans' Memorial Park

On Tuesday, the Town of Niagara was awarded nearly $600,000 in Niagara River Greenway funding for a proposed Town Square project for Veterans' Memorial Community Park, bringing the total funds provided by Greenway to upward of $1 million.
North Tonawanda: Downtown placemaking project shut down

Per New York State Executive Order 202.6 issued March 27th, 2020, non-essential construction projects throughout the State are required to shut down. The Downtown Placemaking project, which began on March 24th, falls under this requirement.

House fire in Wheatfield

On Sunday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office received numerous 911 calls reporting a house fire at 2176 River Road in the Town of Wheatfield. Upon arrival of deputies, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

Aquarium of Niagara to close for two weeks in response to COVID-19

Town of Wheatfield issues coronavirus guidelines for employees

On Friday, Supervisor Don MacSwan told the Tribune the Town of Wheatfield has adjusted its employee policy in response to COVID-19. Specifically, he indicated the town would adhere to various employee guidelines in response to the virus as outlined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
