Sanborn American Legion Post 969 announces Memorial Day service

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Mount View Cemetery on Upper Mountain Road, across from the Pekin Fire Co., starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 30. The Sanborn Fire Co. Band, plus the color guard and firing squad from the Niagara Falls Air Base, and the Cambria Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, will march from the Pekin firehall to the cemetery.

The Niagara Wheatfield High School and Lockport High School softball teams conducted a fundraiser during the month of April, selling cards for $1 apiece, with proceeds going to the Mental Health Association in Niagara County in recognition of May's Mental Health Awareness Month. Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh joined staff from the Niagara County Parks Department to plant a tree in Oppenheim Park to celebrate Arbor Day. The Parks Department will be planting more than 200 trees this season through a forest restoration grant that is part of the federal Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

In August 2013, Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees put into action an idea he had for some time. A recent retiree, Sarkees began collecting bottles and cans at the Lewiston Jazz Festival, with the idea of turning them in to raise funds for local Niagara County food pantries. So began his "Deposits 4 Food" initiative.

At 12:42 a.m. Saturday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications division received a 9-1-1 call reporting a domestic incident on Washington Street in the Town of Wheatfield, Hamlet of Bergholz. Upon arrival, the male subject allegedly barricaded himself within the caller's residence while refusing to comply with deputies' requests to speak with him and exit the residence.
