Community remembers Jerry Wolfgang

Long-time Lewiston resident Jerald I. Wolfgang, age 84, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, at his Lewiston home. He was a prominent face in education, economic development, political and community affairs in Niagara County over past decades.
Election 2023: Sheeran running for reelection

The Hon. Thomas J. Sheeran announced he would seek a ninth, four-year term of office as Lewiston town justice. Sheeran, a long-time faculty member at Niagara University, is completing his eighth term this year. In previous election cycles, the Democrat, Republican, Independence and Conservative parties have all endorsed Sheeran's reelection efforts.

The presentation takes place at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the Russell J. Salvatore Dining Commons on the Niagara University campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The two-part session included a business meeting that saw discussions on a fitness court in planning for Porter on the Lake Town Park; discussions on Greenway projects such as the Gorge View Trail Systems; and a breakthrough Environmental Ambassador Project utilizing high school students, area colleges and businesses.

Niagara University cuts ribbon on renovated Kiernan Center

Niagara University celebrated the completion of an $11.5 million renovation project at its Kiernan Recreation Center on Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The project was funded through a $1 million grant from the New York State Higher Education Capital (HECap) matching program, as well as other private donations and university investments.

She is starting a new chapter in her life, accepting a leadership position responsible for providing pastoral care to over 60 sisters of her order - the Franciscan Sisters of Alleghany - who reside in a motherhouse located in Olean.

New this school year, the "Gallery Project" course allows students to design exhibitions and programming for Lew-Port's new Level Art Gallery. Students are currently preparing an exhibition about Artpark. Each student is researching a specific aspect of Artpark after learning about the park's history through reading, viewing an artist-created documentary, and participating in a guided tour of the park led by regional curator Albert Chao.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital (MSMH) welcomed the providers from UBMD Emergency Medicine to the emergency department on Jan. 1, along with the medical team from Buffalo-Niagara Hospitalists, who will manage inpatient care at the hospital. These two groups are also slated to facilitate both inpatient care and emergency care at the new Lockport Memorial Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital when it opens later in 2023.

Niagara Falls: Arrest made in New Year's Day homicide

Niagara Falls Police have arrested a suspect in the homicide that occurred on the morning of Jan. 1 in the 2200 block of LaSalle Avenue. The suspect is charged with one count of murder in the second degree and will be arraigned in Niagara Falls City Court on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The trustees of the New York Power Authority on Tuesday approved a new, five-year contract agreement with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), a labor union representing more than 570 electricians, line persons, and other skilled craft employees at NYPA, the nation's largest state public power entity providing nearly a quarter of New York's electricity.

Center Street blaze: Business owners still in shock after last week's fire

An early morning fire on Nov. 30 ravaged 744, 746 and 748 Center St., the site of The Vintage Barber, Soully Created and Sue's Frame of Mind. In battling the blaze, first responders from Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1 and members from a half-dozen supporting companies had to break glass, pull off siding, cut into the roof and pump in copious amounts of water.
