Lewiston resident Amy Witryol announced her intentions Wednesday to file a lawsuit against the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, CWM Chemical Services LLC and its parent company, Waste Management Inc. She made the announcement at a press conference at the Hennepin Park Gazebo on Center Street.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital has announced Abhilasha Pandey, M.D., has joined its primary care practice. Pandey is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She was the senior resident and previously practiced at the Beaumont Medical Center in Dearborn, Michigan.

Residents in the community are receiving phone calls for solicitation and a request for payment from a telephone number that is showing up on their caller ID as being from Mount St. Mary's Hospital. These calls are fraudulent. The hospital telephone numbers have been "spoofed."

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer on Monday demanded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency immediately return to Niagara County to expedite the clean-up of radioactive hotspots in Lewiston and Niagara Falls. Schumer said the EPA recently abandoned cleanup activities at one of the sites without a full explanation to local residents, and said the EPA should return to Niagara County as quickly as possible to immediately resume remaining clean-up efforts.

Jamie Hagerty, an 18-year-old Niagara University student majoring in psychology, won the Niagara County Peach Queen scholarship pageant last month. She also competed for Peach Queen in 2016, placing third. Jamie evolved as a contestant this year in her stage presence and ability to answer questions under pressure.

With a finish time of one hour and 14 minutes, Allie Kieffer of Williamsville is not only mighty, she became the first ever female overall winner of The Mighty Niagara Half Marathon on Saturday, Sept. 16. The half-marathon, held in conjunction with the Hospice Dash 5K, brought in runners from around the country and the world with athletes coming from as far away as Mexico and Australia.

The Village of Lewiston is one step closer to an updated local waterfront revitalization program after the Board of Trustees voted Monday to issue a negative declaration on the State Environmental Quality Review related to the LWRP. The board's stated goal is to include more of the village in the program, so as to have the municipality qualify for New York State Department of State grants.

Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Broderick wasted no time Monday in telling a standing-room-only crowd inside Town Hall the Town Council would not vote on John and Joe Rubino's planned unit/urban development concept for Upper Mountain Road. Instead, "I want to listen to what everybody has to say ... and take it in," he said prior to the work session.

The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area has announced its sponsorship of field trips for school districts to Old Fort Niagara's "Fridays on the Frontier" program for the third year in a row. "Fridays on the Frontier" are interactive hands-on education programs for fourth- and seventh-graders that immerse students in the experiences of people who lived in the Niagara Region during the American Revolution. The programs will take place every Friday during the month of October.
