Merton K. Wiepert, longtime councilman and supervisor for the Town of Porter, co-owner of Wiepert's Service Station, and devoted family man, peacefully entered into eternal rest after a lengthy illness on Sept. 16, 2024. He was 85 years old.

The Historical Association of Lewiston's next program, "The Meaning and Significance of the Erie Canal after 200 years," will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St. This presentation will be by Dr. John Montague of the Buffalo Maritime Center.

Artpark & Company wrapped its 50th anniversary season on Saturday with a sold-out Mainstage Theater concert featuring Young the Giant and Cage the Elephant. Fans couldn't have been happier with the "Neon Pill Tour" setlists, as they sang, danced in the aisles, and celebrated the end of the summer music schedule in Lewiston.

Amelia Faddoul was crowned Peach Queen on Sunday night at the close of the 66th annual Niagara County Peach Festival. The 20-year-old Niagara Falls resident is a Niagara University junior. With the win, she earns a $4,000 scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston.

On Friday, standing outside the Lewiston-Porter High School campus, New York State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt, along with Assemblyman Angelo Morinello and Superintendent Paul Casseri, called on Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York State Department of Transportation to reconsider their decision not to install a traffic light outside the school.

It takes a lot to slow down Shirley Jaynes. Not even a hip fracture, the result of a recent fall, can dampen the spirits of the energetic, 86-year-old resident of North Tonawanda. In fact, she counts "staying positive" as an essential life lesson she's learned over the years, something she advocates for others to embrace like an old friend. Sage advice, indeed.
