On Friday, the Niagara Falls Fire Department received a call at 11 a.m. regarding a possible structure fire at 510 6th St. Upon arrival, crews found a two-and-a-half story home with heavy smoke and flames visible from the second floor.

As part of its final audit/regular meeting session of 2021 last week, the Lewiston Town Board opened with a public hearing en route to moving on a conceptual plan for an existing planned unit development. The action included a rezoning of the land area from R-1 (single family residential) to PUD status on Northridge Drive and Ridge Road, and now allows for an additional 10 units to the Northridge Drive apartments complex.

The Niagara County Department of Emergency Services and the Niagara USA Chamber of Commerce are cohosting a free drive-thru mask giveaway for businesses on Thursday, Jan. 6, at the county's Public Safety Training Facility in Lockport. Masks and signage about state masking requirements are available for any Niagara County business, though supplies are limited.

On Saturday, Jan. 15, Old Fort Niagara presents "Winter Warriors," a day of family-oriented programming focusing on how people survived on the 18th century frontier during the winter months. From 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., visitors can learn how soldiers and Native Americans traveled hundreds of miles through sub-zero temperatures to conduct raids on enemy settlements.

A proposal to build a new structure on vacant land at 860 Center St., Lewiston, was tabled Monday by both the Historic Preservation Commission and Planning Commission. This action was at the request of architect Jim Fittante, who said his client needs additional time to consider crafting a structure more in keeping with the village's preferred aesthetic.

Moving along now that the dedication of the Presbyterian Church and Cemetery have taken place, I am starting a new project. Apart from regular cleaning, I'm hoping to move forward to placing a permanent granite monument in the Potter's Field behind the old stone church.

The First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston will open its doors to the community on Christmas Eve. All are welcome to attend the candlelight service in the historic Old Stone Church at 505 Cayuga St. "This is Noel - a Christmas Eve Service of music and story," will begin at 6 p.m. Robert Hull, music director for the church and renowned Western New York organist, will direct the choir.

During the annual Lewiston Christmas Walk, the proudly Binational Rotary Club of Lewiston & Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, offered locally made holiday-scented candles for sale, with net proceeds to benefit Ransomville's Care-N-Share. The food pantry serves an average of 320 individuals every month, providing food for families to prepare at home.

Coleman announced EFC successfully closed its State Revolving Funds Revenue Bonds, Series 2021 B (2010 Master Financing Program) (Green Bonds) bond transaction that will help ratepayers in 54 communities save $19 million over the next 20 years.

Niagara University's Levesque Institute for Civic Engagement and its College of Education have teamed up with Old Falls Street USA to transform the three-block entertainment district into "Candy Cane Story Lane." For the month of December, children and their families can take a self-guided stroll along the path to read Gregg and Evan Spiridellis' charming story "Are You Grumpy Santa?" On Saturdays, those who answer questions about the story will receive a free treat courtesy of Bryce's Snack Trailer.

Christmas Walk weekend wrapped Sunday night with the inaugural Lewiston Christmas Lights Parade. The one-hour event featured floats and decorated first-responder vehicles, as well as dancers, costumed characters, musical performances and local nonprofits. Families lined the roadway to watch, cheer, take pictures and collect candy.
