DEC announces start of 'NYHABS' online notification & reporting system for harmful algal blooms

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Interim Commissioner Sean Mahar and State Department of Health (DOH) Commissioner Dr. James McDonald on Friday reminded New Yorkers to learn about and be aware of harmful algal blooms, or "HABs," as the 2024 HABs notification season starts.
Niagara Wine Trail hosting charcuterie event

The Niagara Wine Trail members announce the return of a wine and cheese event - now expanding to be a charcuterie event. Participating wineries will feature a different cheese paired with a special wine. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday June 1, and from noon until 5 p.m. Sunday, June 2. Tickets are $40 per person per day and include the cheese sample and three tastes of wine at each participating winery.
Conference at UB to address youth mental health crisis, encourage collaboration across sectors

4 Niagara County parks officially open Friday; Oppenheim delayed a week

The Niagara County Department of Public Works said four of the county's parks - Burmaster at Bond Lake, West Canal Marina, Krull and Royalton Ravine - will officially open for the season this Friday, May 24. The parks are open from dawn until dusk. Oppenheim Park, which has undergone significant infrastructure work, will open Saturday, June 1.
Predatory sexual assault conviction in Niagara County

Niagara County District Attorney Brian D. Seaman announced a Niagara County jury returned a guilty verdict against Gregory M. Pearson, age 34, of Niagara Falls, this afternoon after deliberating for less than two hours. Pearson was convicted of seven counts of predatory sexual assault against a child committed in Niagara Falls in the years 2017 through 2021.

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced 53-year-old Demetrius F. Gore of Buffalo pleaded guilty yesterday afternoon before Erie County Court Judge Susan Eagan to one count of assault in the second degree (class "D" felony) for his involvement in an attack that resulted in serious physical injuries to the victim.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $127 million to police departments and sheriffs' offices outside of New York City for new technology and equipment to prevent and solve crimes and improve public safety. The governor secured additional funding in the FY 2025 enacted budget to fund applications made by 378 law enforcement agencies that responded to the state's application for funding last fall.
