National Grid names Juneteenth a company holiday in US

National Grid will honor Juneteenth as a company holiday for all U.S. employees starting this June. The company stated, "National Grid has remained committed to inclusion, equity and diversity over the years, but refocused their efforts in 2020, fueled by the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd.

Congressman Brian Higgins and New York State Sen. Tim Kennedy say the Skyway project will remain on hold until the state addresses the needs of the community. They are calling for several transportation improvements to plan for the eventual removal of the Skyway, including removal of the tolls for Hamburg commuters.

At a press conference at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, Congressman Chris Jacobs called for transparency on reopening deliberations, and a plan to allow families to reunite on June 22 - when the current travel restrictions expire. 'Vax and Scratch' program extended

Over the weekend, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the "Vax and Scratch" program - which provides free New York state Lottery scratch-off tickets to individuals 18 and over with a grand prize of $5 million - will extend another week. Participating sites will be open from Monday, June 7, through Friday, June 11. The program will not impact education funding.

The Diocese of Buffalo recently became aware of an action brought pursuant to the Child Victims Act by an individual who alleges that he was abused as a child in the 1990s by three priests of the diocese, Fr. Adolph Kowalczyk, pastor of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Orchard Park; Fr. Gregory Dobson, who is retired but continues to assist in various parishes of the Diocese; and Fr. Mieczyslaw (Matt) Nycz, pastor of SS. Peter and Paul in Williamsville. The complaint was brought anonymously and was not served on the diocese, but was discovered during a recent search of publicly filed complaints.

Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) Corp. and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice have come together to establish a new collaboration between the state's SNUG Street Outreach program and BRAVE (Buffalo Rising Against Violence at ECMC). This new endeavor is designed to expand the existing work of both programs to further reduce gun violence and improve services to victims of violent crime in the Buffalo area.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced the dedication of a major project that removed an underutilized, two-mile stretch of the former Robert Moses Parkway - now called the Niagara Scenic Parkway - in the City of Niagara Falls. His team said this work created a stunning new area in Niagara Falls State Park called "Gorgeview," which provides unimpeded access to the Niagara Gorge and improved recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the fishing season for muskellunge, also known as "muskie" or "musky," starts in most state waters later this week. The season for New York's largest freshwater sportfish begins Saturday in inland waters and on Saturday, June 19, in Great Lakes waters, which include Lake Erie, upper Niagara River, lower Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
