Batavia Downs Gaming & Hotel announced Batavia Downs will host its famous wiener dog races on Sunday, Oct. 17. While there is no live harness racing that day, a different type of racing will go on at Batavia's historic track. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the release of a proposed regulation that, if adopted, would allow counties to opt out of the recently established end-of-year deer hunt, slated to occur annually between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. The "holiday hunt" is an extension of the late bow and muzzleloader deer season in New York's southern zone.

The Buffalo Olmsted Conservancy announced the grand staircase restoration project at Hoyt Lake in Delaware Park. The project aims to finish its capital fundraising and to begin preparatory site work in fall 2021. As the nation prepares to celebrate the 200th birth year of Frederick Law Olmsted, a ribbon-cutting is expected in late 2022 to unveil the new staircase.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Tuesday announced that - less than one month since applications opened - $89 million in child care provider stabilization grant funds have been disbursed. More than 10,600 of New York's 18,000 eligible child care providers have applied for Child Care Stabilization Grant funding. To date, child care providers have requested $585 million of the available $1.1 billion in federal funding.
