DEC: Regional workgroups to facilitate implementation of state's Great Lakes Action Agenda

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced the agency is hosting a series of regional workgroup meetings to engage with the public about New York's Great Lakes Action Agenda 2023 (GLAA). The workgroups will assist in the implementation of the action plan to guide restoration and conservation and foster sustainable, resilient communities across New York's Great Lakes region.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced applications are available for the Niagara Falls Small Business Property Improvement Program. The $5 million initiative will provide grants of up to 50% of total project costs, up to $100,000 per property, to eligible small businesses to foster revitalization of traditional mixed-use business districts.

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. (ECHDC) board of directors met Monday to approve several items its said represent Gov. Kathy Hochul's vision for the continued revitalization and maintenance of the Buffalo waterfront. The board endorsed three contracts for the management of the public space, facilities and grounds "to enrich the programs for families to enjoy at both Canalside and the Outer Harbor."

Seiches are the result of wind blowing a sizeable standing wave across Lake Erie and onto the shoreline, causing flooding, rapid and intense erosion, deposition of sand and debris, potential hazardous conditions, such as rip currents, and risk to life.

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced 63-year-old Gerald Steven Pigeon, also known as Steve Pigeon, of Niagara Falls, pleaded guilty this afternoon before State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller to one count of sexual abuse in the first degree (class "D" violent felony). The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge ahead of a jury trial that was scheduled to begin next month.
