Community giving spreads from California to Lewiston at Mount St. Mary's Hospital

After seeing a post on Facebook about a donation to Mount St. Mary's from Brickyard Pub & BBQ, Californian Rosemary Miklitsch reached out to the Lewiston restaurant to match the previous donation of 250 meals. As it turns out, Rosemary grew up in Lewiston, and her grandfather, Dr. George Berry, was a doctor at MSM many years ago. Rosemary's parents also received care at Mount St. Mary's.

Border Community SERVICE of Niagara University collects masks for seniors

Niagara University's Border Community SERVICE program is leading an effort distribute face masks to seniors in the Niagara Region. The organization is focused on enhancing regional emergency preparedness. It solicited the participation of CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) members, and partnered with the volunteer group Operation Sewing Squad - Flattening the WNY Curve to make the masks, which it has distributed to local organizations that help the senior and other vulnerable populations in the county.

Personnel from Upper Mountain Fire Co., Lewiston Fire Co. No. 1, Youngstown Fire Co., Tri Community Ambulance, Ransomville Fire Co., Cambria Fire Co., Lewiston Police Department and the Niagara County Sheriff's Department held an "Appreciation Parade" Saturday evening for Mount St. Mary's health care workers. Lights were flashing with cheers and sirens sounding for hospital staff as the procession moved through the main parking lot as a sign of gratitude for those keeping the community safe and healthy.

Higgins announces launch of 'Get My Payment' portal

Congressman Brian Higgins announced residents can now check the status of direct payments provided through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury announced the launch of the "Get My Payment" app, which allows Americans to track the status of their emergency relief funding and add bank direct deposit information if the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) doesn't already have it on file.

Elected leaders working to reduce crowd sizes

On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order extending limitations he placed on social gatherings to slow the spread of COVID-19. His mandate, "which closed or otherwise restricted public or private businesses or places of public accommodation, and which required postponement or cancellation of all nonessential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g. parties, celebrations, games, meetings or other social events) ... shall be continued ... until 11:59 p.m. on April 29, 2020, unless later extended by a future executive order."

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced all "New York State on PAUSE" functions will be extended for an additional two weeks. The governor also directed schools and nonessential businesses to stay closed for an additional two weeks, through April 29. The state will re-evaluate after this additional two-week period.

The Aquarium of Niagara is strengthening its COVID-19 procedures in light of the news that a tiger in New York City has contracted the COVID-19 virus. This is the first known case of transmission of COVID-19 from humans to animals at an accredited zoo or aquarium.
Kaleida Health participating in experimental therapies for current patients; local eateries donate food

Eligible COVID-19 patients at Buffalo General Medical Center and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital will begin participating in a number of FDA-approved experimental therapy options as early as this week. These therapies include a clinical trial of the arthritis medication, sarilumab; convalescent plasma infusions for critically ill patients as a way of introducing antibodies from individuals that have fully recovered from COVID-19; and the use of a promising antiviral medication, Remdesivir.

Kaleida Health on Tuesday announced it has received its most recent planned shipment of protective face masks. Purchased from Foam Depot Inc., the 1 million surgical/procedural masks (pictured), are the types the hospital system is using with its "universal masking" guidelines. They are available for staff and visitors to use in all of our sites, including in hospitals, long-term care and home care.

Facebook Journalism Project awards grant to Niagara Frontier Publications

Six local newsrooms in New York were selected to receive almost $30,000 in funding - CNY Latino, Examiner Media, Niagara Frontier Publications, Spotlight Newspapers, Wallkill Valley Publications Inc., and Watertown Daily Times, with each of these recipients getting $5,000. In this first round, 50 local newsrooms across the U.S. and Canada are receiving $5,000 grants to help cover unexpected costs associated with covering the crisis in their communities. Additional recipients will be announced in the coming weeks.
