The New York State Department of State on Tuesday announced the completion of a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) project for Scenic Woods-Bicentennial Park in the Town of Grand Island. The completion of the nearly $600,000 project, which was funded in part with a $197,634 EPF LWRP grant, is helping to transform the town's waterfront into a vibrant destination with public spaces and amenities for residents and visitors.

When the first South Grand Island Bridge was constructed in 1935, connecting Tonawanda with Niagara Falls, the New York State Thruway Highway 190 did not exist. Travelers heading north used Grand Island Boulevard as its primary thoroughfare, according to Supervisor John C. Whitney. That is why the former bustling Niagara Falls Visitor Center was built at the corner of Grand Island Boulevard and Staley Road - and why there are so many motels along the boulevard.

It's business as usual - whatever that means in 2020 - as Lewiston merchants prepare for an uptick in holiday shopping in coming weeks. Though coronavirus cases have spiked in Erie and Niagara counties this month, the village has only reported four new cases in the past six weeks. Safety protocols put in place when New York was "unpaused" last spring are still in place, and storeowners are working diligently to keep their sites clean and virus-free.

Cashless tolling will begin tonight and extend into the overnight hours on the New York State Thruway, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office. The state says the conversion will take place simultaneously at 58 tolling locations across the thruway's 450-mile ticketed system. With some 267 million motorists traveling the thruway each year, AAA Western and Central New York supports this move toward a more efficient traffic system.

On Wednesday, Heart, Love & Soul Executive Director Mark Baetzhold and Assistant Executive Director Pam Dixon received a donation of 4,500 pounds of nonperishable canned and dried food commodities from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Delivery assistance came from the local Niagara Falls ward and its members, and the team from Buffalo Tungsten, which has been housing and distributing the food deliveries in Western New York.

This year's inductees are Marsha McWilson, Seven Day Faith, Thom Rotella, Michael Hatalak, D'Amico Music, Thomas Nelson and Charles Chiarenza.
