Milling, paving to begin on Center Street

The Village of Lewiston announced the next phase of rebuilding Center Street will commence Monday, May 2. Milling is scheduled to take place for a week, followed by a week of paving.

As I am writing this column, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in Western New York, according to AAA, is $4.24 a gallon. One year ago, that same gallon of gas cost $2.86. Clearly, the rise in gas prices, and the overall inflation of prices on everything, is hitting the wallets of families across Niagara County.

In August 2013, Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees put into action an idea he had for some time. A recent retiree, Sarkees began collecting bottles and cans at the Lewiston Jazz Festival, with the idea of turning them in to raise funds for local Niagara County food pantries. So began his "Deposits 4 Food" initiative.

Mercy Flight wins $100,000 grant at 21st Century Fund voting event

The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo's 21st Century Fund, a giving circle open to anyone who wants to give back in Western New York, announced its members voted to award a $100,000 grant to Mercy Flight Inc. on April 21. The grant will be used for Mercy Flight's implementation of a lifesaving air ambulance enhancement in rural Western New York.

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $4.08, down 3 cents change from last week. One year ago, the price was $2.87. The New York state average is $4.18, down 4 cents from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.89.

New York Power Authority fishing piers to open for season

New York Power Authority fishing facilities including the fishing pier at the base of NYPA's Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant will open for the season Friday, April 1, weather and water levels permitting. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz on Monday announced an agreement between New York state, Erie County and the NFL's Buffalo Bills franchise for a $1.4 billion new stadium in Orchard Park. Hochul's negotiations secured a 30-year commitment for the Bills to remain in Buffalo, and a combined $550 million from the NFL and Bills - approved by the NFL owners.
