Local breast cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and corporate and community members are uniting to make the greatest impact to save lives and ensure no one faces breast cancer alone at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2-mile walk. This noncompetitive, inspirational event helps fund the future of breast cancer research and programs. Participants can expect several new health and safety measures onsite to help protect the community, supporters and staff.

Back in July, I wrote about the terrible storms and flooding that did tremendous property damage across Niagara County. The torrential rainfall hit in a line from Lewiston to Lockport, wreaking havoc on many areas below the escarpment. Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced funding is now available to help low-income households that have fallen behind on their utility bills during the COVID-19 pandemic. Administered by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the regular arrears supplement is available to households who are eligible for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) and behind on their heating utility bills, but that do not qualify for the utility assistance offered by New York's Emergency Rental Assistance Program.

Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and Sisters of Charity Hospital have become the first hospitals in Western New York to offer what they called "next-generation technology" for dialysis care called the Tablo Hemodialysis System. The changeover to the new dialysis program within Catholic Health is aimed at improving the patient experience, while reducing the cost and complexity historically associated with dialysis treatment.

The Office of Head Start (OHS) has awarded the Community Action Organization of WNY Inc. a $77.1 million grant over five years to provide Head Start and Early Head Start programming to 1,080 Head Start students and 205 infants, toddlers and pregnant women in Erie County. Holy Cross Head Start Inc., formerly a delegate of CAO since 1969, was also awarded a portion of the Erie County grant and will now serve the community as a Grantee agency alongside CAO. Holy Cross was awarded $25 million over five years, serving 500 Head Start children.

Niagara County Legislator Jesse Gooch on Thursday sent a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul asking her to intervene in efforts to lower the speed limit on Shawnee Road in the Town of Wheatfield. Residents have been seeking a speed limit reduction for years, but the state Department of Transportation has refused the request.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced all New Yorkers enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for September. Hochul also directed the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, which administers SNAP in New York, to continue working with the federal government to ensure these supplemental benefits will reach households in need throughout the fall.

"Time is brain" is a statement often used to describe how minutes matter for patients who suffer a stroke. Mount St. Mary's Hospital is moving forward with plans to install a helipad on its campus at 5300 Military Road in Lewiston, which will provide emergency air transport for patients who may require a higher level of care. Currently, emergency ground transport time to Buffalo is 45 minutes; air transport would cut the time to 8 minutes.

Niagara County has received $300,000 through the state's consolidated funding application for the county's microenterprise grant program, according to Niagara County Legislature Economic Development Chairman Rich Andres. The Parkinson's Foundation will host its annual "Moving Day Buffalo, A Walk for Parkinson's" at the Eastern Hills Mall on Saturday, Sept. 18. The event begins at 9 a.m. Between 300 and 500 people are expected to engage in movement demonstrations, Parkinson's-related exhibits and a half-mile walk to beat Parkinson's disease. Funds raised through "Moving Day" will support research and programs to improve the lives of people with Parkinson's disease and their families.
